It’s now been 2.5 days since Honey showed up at our pond, and the weather is getting cooler. I have no way of knowing whether she’ll stay in the area this winter, but she’ll surely not visit our small pond after it freezes over. In the meantime, I hear the echo of the “Soup Nazi” episode: “No duck for you!”
Meanwhile, the autumn leaves are falling into the water:

Remember the 60’s song by Herman’s Hermits, “No duck today, my love is gone away”.
That was my first thought too. An even more baffling song now that milk deliveries are unheard of. His chick is gone and all he can think of is to tell the milkman to change the order. Now people will be wondering what perverted acts he was getting up to with his girlfriend.
Up next: Mrs Brown you’ve got a lovely duck.
Ummm, Karly Simon, wasn’t it : “The baker told me what you do with bread!” ??
Years before MacDonsludge started putting video cameras into their kitchens so you could see what their special version of mayonnaise was.
I think that was one hit wonder Carol Bayer-Sager. I never understood that line — I was only about 8. And how did the baker know?
One dreads to think.
To be honest, I wonder how people didn’t dare to admit to recognising the taste of the McSludge “special sauce”.
It is hard to predict love between two different species but then approximately 50% of the mergers within our own tend to bomb out.
At least there were no children.
It almost looks like Honey could be hidden in this picture. Maybe the turtles are still there.
Spot the duck. Click on picture to enlarge.
Nice picture!
I’d sit down with a bottle of cheap whiskey and a bunch of old country albums, get snot-flying drunk, and have a good cry. Tomorrow, after you’ve sobered up, go out and nurse the hangover with a nice meal, say a confit of….Oh, no, wait…..
I love the poetry in your wonderful photo, PCC(E). Melancholia for Honey leaves.
Yeah, well, if Honey decides to stay for the winter, as many Finnish mallards nowadays do, I’m sure JC will take care of her feeding.
Well, it does suggest some questions to address.
– Can something be done to prevent the pond freezing over (floating balls, small fountain to maintain agitation ; bubble-wrap type insulation over some of the area to change the heat-absorbtion/ heat loss balance ??) or are metropolitan Chicago winters too severe? (I note the “heat island” effect.)
– Given adequate food (isn’t this what graduate students were invented for?), what sort of thermal and security protection would be needed, and how can it be targetted for Honey particularly?
I worked at a pool store high school going into college many, many years ago. More than 15 years. You can heat a pool or spa outdoors but not a pond that I know of. Probably can make it work. There are duck houses for people who keep ducks. My Vertebrate History professor in college had birds. Why not just adopt a kitten? That would be awesome!
(Jerry is enjoying his retirement travelling. This doesn’t fit with a cat at home. And when he does settle down to growing old disgracefully, it’s almost certainly going to be a Bengal kitteh.)
Where’s that “land of milk and honey”?
Oh well, there are always the squirrels…
I wish I understood what it means to be content with any other animal besides a hermit crab. Or maybe a turtle or two. I had a cat once also. It would make life easier or happier I guess. Still holding out for a homo sapien I suppose. Who cares about religion and other things. Very difficult. Nobody cares about these things that I have found.
I’m only 35 and am straight meaning I am attracted to men. But once, in 2016, I was oddly, physically attracted to a woman. It was so bizarre. Nothing ever came of it but it was a curious thing to me especially since I already question things like that. I have a post on tw***** – “is where the land of mead and cream slips into a quiet dream” . . .
