  4. Little story. I’m telling my wife one morning that Richard Dawkins is coming to D.C. and that we should go see him. We attended one of his lectures a couple of years ago in Rochester, MN and his co-host was Julia Sweeney. The discussion was mostly about religion, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but we’re nones. This current ad for Professor Dawkin’s lecture touted evolution so I’m much more excited. Back to my story. Sorry. So, she asks who is he having as a special guest and I say, “Some guy named Jerry Coy…” “JERRY COYNE???”, She exclaimed. “Oh, do you know of him?”, I asked carefully (It’s a guy thing for self preservation). Like the monolith in 2001, I see the book she is currently reading come into view; “Faith vs. Fact” by, ah, Jerry Coyne. Heavy panting and long story short, we’re coming. Keep fighting the good fight.

  5. I went ahead and signed up for the blog. That is the term (blog) that WordPress uses.

    I have been a reader of WEIT from the beginning. I never actually signed up since I check it every day and did not want to get a bunch of emails. But if it will make PCC(e) happy, I have signed up and will delete the emails without reading them.

    1. Web site or blog, whatever you want to call it – you won’t get any email from joining up. Not unless you ask for them…

      1. I switched to a weekly email but I did not see an option to opt out of emails. I can delete one a week.

        1. I guess I’m just not understanding. If I don’t check one of the two boxes asking for notification – I don’t get any emails.

          1. This is about the email list for the blog which sends out an email when there are new posts. You do have the option to get less frequent emails. Look at the left sidebar at the top under Email Subscription.

          2. Understand but my experience is – unless you click on/check one of the two boxes right under the comment box – one says notify me of new comments, the other notify me of new posts you will receive nothing. However, I do not know how to stop receiving notification of new posts once you have checked this block.

          3. If you go to the WordPress Subscription Management page you can choose to “Block all email updates from blogs you are following on WordPress”.

            I just subscribed to increase PCCs numbers but blocked WP emails since I don’t need any more emails. I visit the site daily.

          4. Thanks Steven. I’ve resisted signing up for years as I didn’t want the emails. I keep the last post as a pinned tab on Firefox, and each morning I refresh it and then click through to the next post. Now I’ve subscribed, clicked “Manage” at “You are following this bl*g”, then in “Manage” I’ve opened WEIT and set both sliders to “off”. If I start to get emails I’ll just unsubscribe.

          5. I’ve just realised that having now signed up, the “Manage” button has disappeared. I can change settings by signing in using the “post a comment box. Then I can click my avatar (top right), then “notification settings”, then “reader subscriptions”. I think this is what Steven means.

            Not as simple as I thought!

    What does it mean to subscribe to a blog anyhow? It’s here whether I subscribe or not.

    1. I didn’t call it that. WordPress calls it that. Subscribing usually means you get emails–either summaries or a new one with each post. I guess I’m one of the subscribers so I have to subtract 1.

    2. You’re tempting fate, Simon! – our host has strong views on the topic.

      What it means to subscribe is just that you get an e-mail message from WordPress each time a new entry is posted, with a link to the post so you can go directly to it rather than scrolling through the WEBSITE.

  9. I’m not a subscriber and never will be, but after reading my email WEIT is the first site I check every single day and have for several years. My mail box is unwieldy enuf without asking for more.

    I understand though. I have a youtube channel that has stood at 9 whole subscribers for many months and I have been waiting for it to click over to 10. But some of the music I post has received several thousand views, so I know that my minor efforts aren’t for nought.

    1. If you have gmail, all the emails go directly into the “social” folder where they (along with everything else in there) can be safely ignored. And even if you don’t have gmail, almost every email client has a way of teaching it that any mail from a particular sender is Spam and is to be trashed. Having said that, of course, you shouldn’t feel any need to inconvenience yourself for Jerry, but I can think of at least two reasons to do it. 1) This website is free and since it provides content you enjoy, you can consider a subscription the cost of that content. 2) It will make Jerry happy.

  15. This website now has an order of magnitude more followers than residents in the town where I grew up (admittedly surrounded by larger cities on all sides, mind you)!
