In line with the end-of-the-day-feel-good policy, here’s a chipmunk caught at the bird feeder, dumping his ballast to make a hasty exit. Look how many seeds it can pack in those pouches!
Poor thing. . .

I don’t understand the chipmunk’s behavior.
First, there’s the fact that he just stayed there for as long as he did. Chipmunks ARE skittish, so it’s amazing that the guy with the camera got that close.
Second, why dump all the nuts? What, is this an animal expressing guilt? Come on, little guy! You scored all those nuts! Why didn’t you just scram/vamoose/skedaddle with them?
Weird.
Guilty conscience.
Flight behavior, at a guess:
– It *really* didn’t want to empty the pouches.
– It always dump the pouches to run faster.
– It was turned the wrong way.
A few days ago while eating my supper (chicken), I watched a chipmunk (Tamias striatus) devour a live 10 inch long ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctuates) on my patio. The chipmunk started eating at the tail end, but when it seemed to notice movement at the head end, it grabbed that and started eating it. In the eating process, which was mostly biting off pieces of flesh, the chipmunk would take about two inches of mostly skin into its mouth and then pull it out with its paws while sucking and chomping. What the chipmunk could not swallow it stuffed into its cheek pouches. With its pouches stuffed, this voracious predator (who knew?) ambled off to the woods nearby. Only a tiny bit of orange colored snake skin and a couple of streches of backbone were left on the patio.
Dear Why Evolution is True,What is a Chimpunk? Has the missing link between Chimps and Punks been discovered?Best regards,Sincerely,J Wright

Daddy?
Awwww poor chipmunk. The one that hangs around here has been sleeping on the railing of my deck. It also thinks it can hide and no one can see it, which is dangerous with my dog so I’m often shooing it along.

“Wait, dude, this is your food? TOTALLY didn’t know, so sorry. I’ll just put that down and, uh, we’re cool now, right? Right? …I’ll just go.”
