Friday: Hili dialogue (and lagniappe)

May 1, 2015 • 4:57 am

Well, this long painful (oy, my back!) week has drawn to an end, and all one can say is. . . well:

(from Moderately Confused by Jeff Stahler; h/t: jsp)

But in Dobrzyn the cherry trees are blooming (good news for my pie aspirations this fall!), and the Princess is celebrating a holiday. Isn’t she fetching? (I don’t mean mice.)

Hili: I’m not hunting mice today, it’s Labor Day in Europe.
A: So what are you going to eat?
Hili: Veal.

In Polish:
Hili: Nie łowię dziś myszy, święto pracy.
Ja: To co będziesz jadła?
Hili: Cielęcinę.
And lagniappe: Here is the Princess in her realm, or, as Malgorzata says, “And another picture documenting the state of the orchard – day 5 of blooming.”

  1. TGIF ? For us no anglo-saxophones another clickbait for InternetSlang.com…TGFT !

      1. This non-anglophone (well, non-native at least) thought it was about the GIF image format…

      2. To be honest, round here it’s always been TFIF, and the first ‘f’ is what you’d expect.

          1. Thank Friday it’s Frigging Friday? That would work, unless there were a mad Norwegian in earshot.
The vessel’s count of mad Norwegians is three, today ; increasing next week, I think.

          2. I’m puzzled by your trebly redundant formulation of “mad Norwegians” on a seagoing vessel. There’re other varieties of Norwegians and / or sailors?

            b&

          3. Some Norwegians are madder than others. Some are differently mad than others (I recall one who was a pastor of some non-pasta-based religion AND a rope-access instructor – the latter really does revolve around not trusting in the hand of g*d, but fully redundant anchoring and rope work, with a very calculated approach to not falling out of the sky, screaming before you hit the deck and splash off adjacent machinery. I don’t get that combination.)
Some – a few – approach conventional sanity, if from a very unusual direction.
            It’s probably the sunlight hours.

    1. TGIF long predates the Internet. Google Ngram Viewer shows hits going back to the 1950s.

  2. My preferred acronym for the day is TFIF.
    Maybe it’s just me.

The photo of Hili in the flowering orchard is really beautiful.

  3. Yep, it’s National Riot Day here in Germany. Or in Berlin at least.

Not exactly on topic, but some Germanophones might be interested to see that the daily paper the Tagesspiegel has a good editorial criticizing the head of PEN in Germany for not supporting Charlie Hebdo.

Basically she says that free speech is all or nothing, and how can anyone speak of tolerance if it’s seen as acceptable for Charlie to laugh at the Pope, but not at anything to do with Islam.

    She quotes Salman Rushdie too.

    1. “free speech is all or nothing”

Thanks for the comment on things in Germany. (I don’t read German, but that quote is a real pleasure to read).

  4. She’s a very cute cat.

What a great situation she’s in. She’s getting all the nature of an outdoor cat, but will probably have the lifespan and lack of disease etc. of an indoor cat.

  5. I used to call one of my cats Sweet Feet sometimes (she was an exceptionally elegant cat).

I think Hili deserves that appellation as well: Those cute paws!

  6. Lovely cherry blossoms! They remind me of my unsuccessful attempt at growing cherries in my back yard. (I chose a variety that needed pollenation from another tree, and there were few pollenators about. It was a Learning Experience.) But I still remember my spring excitement when the tree blossomed.

  7. That last shot is gorgeous, esp. the way the light is striking Hili’s face!
