It’s still coming down

February 1, 2015 • 2:18 pm

Perhaps we’ll get 18 inches or more of snow today: it’s still coming down steadily and the wind is blowing hard, so the snow sometimes falls sideways. Occasionally a big avalanche drops from the roof of my building.

Here’s the pond outside my office; you can see snow piling up on the branches and railings:

Not good thoroughfares for my squirrels!

Snow on branch

However, the rodents are dauntless, and are out nomming in the inclement weather. Here’s a wet squirrel eating peanuts and sunflower seeds that I put in a plastic box so they wouldn’t get too wet:

Go home, squirrels! It’s too wet for you!

  1. The critters are hungry here! I’ve had a couple of squirrels visit along with many birds. I’m contemplating putting a walnut out and seeing if the squirrel is brave enough to come up on the deck to get it.

Only flurries here so far. We are going to get hit like this later and it will continue so it menaces me on my drive to work.

  2. Beautiful branch pattern–you have an eye for composition (both literary and photographic)!

    1. I shoveled 8″ around 10:30. The wet heavy stuff. And another 7-8 inches now at 4:30. The second bit was a lot of blowing/drifting and it’s hard to tell how much was new accumulation. 12-16 inches before we’re done, supposedly. Not looking forward to tomorrow morning.

  3. This implies you are at work. I hope you go home before you are snowed in. Classes are probably going to be cancelled tomorrow.

  4. I’m slated to get 8-12 inches of that tonight, and 1-3 inches of snow and ice tomorrow. Sure to be fun clearing on Tuesday.

  5. 18 inches of show (46 cm): is this unit Traditional, Postmodern, Modern, or Post-Secular?
I prefer my rain and drizzle, here in the Balkans. 😉

  6. So after all the snow at about 30 degrees the wind picks up straight from the north and temp starts down. At 22 degrees now, 4 pm. They don’t mention these things in the tourism guides.

  7. Time to Go home… The snow is heavy & beautiful, but travel on ground will be too troublesome. The rodent is Jerry cute, and the box is the right size. :)… Finally I’m pretty much in the mood to fix my computer, I can’t use google.

  8. Eighteen inches? My house hasn’t gotten that much cumulative snowfall since I was born.

  9. There’s no cold like Chicago cold…the wind off the lake will peel skin. Brrr.

I’ve been in shorts all week. 🙂

  10. I hate the cold but fresh snow is totally beautiful. You have to be in a beautiful place for it to be beautiful, though.

  11. The high winds are playing havoc with any snow clearing activities. It’s blowing and swirling and drifting, in spots up to a foot. I’ve cleared the snow once this evening, and will have to spend at least 2 hours tomorrow digging out. It’s brrracing.

  12. Dire predictions a couple days ago for snow in Pgh today have turned to just rain since ~noon.

  13. I am GREEN with jealousy!!! I LOVE SNOW!!!!

When I lived in Tromsø that wiuld be an everyday amount through the winter…

And the sound of snow is wonderful.

    1. It’s nice if you don’t have to shovel it or drive in it. This means that as a child I loved it. It was great growing up in the 70s when we got a lot of snow in winter & I could ice skate when I was around 2. I still have my little leather skates with the fur on them.

  14. I love the pipette tip box lid re-purposed as a squirrel food bowel (and still sporting autoclave tape).

  15. “Here’s the pond outside my office; you can see snow piling up on the branches and railings…”

Not to mention on the pond! 😉
