Via David Dobbs’s Neuron Culture via Matthew Cobb, we have this wonderful video of an owl family waking up to discover a GoPro Camera outside their burrow. Be sure to watch the whole thing. Oh, and somebody should identify the owls.
Owls are now Honorary Cats™.
Those are heavy-breathin’owls🐞
That’s so funny. What was with Darth Vader Owl? Is that a normal sound? A warning sound to the intruder?
Not always easy with juveniles, even semi fledged, but they look like Little Owls (athene noctua).
You always capitalise the genus name ‘A’thene noctua
One always capitalises the genus name ‘A’thene noctua.
?! Except on this occasion when…you did not !
Reminded me of the “Dawn of Man” sequence from 2001. GoPro = mysterious monolith. Just add Strauss.
Athene cunicularia!!! 😀
I love owls, and I am so glad owls are now Honorary Cats! You should have seen my cat Ernie watching this – he was entranced (as I was) and he couldn’t quite figure out what was happening. We both enjoyed it!
I am very glad that owls now enjoy the status of honorary cats, to say nothing of the upgrade accorded to the fox as well. Good show on both accounts. I look forward to viewing the accompanying video when I am at home.
Though I wonder if that makes squirrels honorary mice.
Perish the thought! Given the frequency of their appearance on this site, I am of the mind that squirrels are a stand alone rodent. Cute enough, and furry enough to forgo the honorary appellation.
Very nice! I think it is Athene noctua (eurasian species).
I’m not sure where to put this comment. I don’t have Jerry’s email. This is not part of the above entry. Perhaps Jerry has already talked about this–I’m a newcomer to this website. I must share the youtube video by George Monbiot called “How Wolves Change Rivers”. Well worth posting on this website. Thank you!
Welcome!
Jerry’s email is not hard to find by Googling or by exploring the links at the top right of the page.
If you haven’t already done so, you should read Da Roolz, where Jerry sets out some guidelines for commenting on the site and for submitting suggestions.
Thank you, Gregory. Will do.
Generally people just post the link in a comment, OR email Jerry. Be sure to read the Roolz first which is found on the left. There us a preferred format for posting links, for example, so that it does not appear as a big window in the comments.
Links that are on topic can be posted in comments. But links and suggestions for new topics really ought to be emailed to Jerry, so he can decide whether that’s a topic he wants to discuss on his site.
Thank you!
Mark, thanks. Will read.
They’re so cute! I love it! And yet . . . since the camera clearly changed the owls’ behavior, I’d have to say it was set up way too close to that nest hole.
Cool video. It prompts me to get a GoPro.
I will admit to jumping the first time it pecks at the camera, even though I was expecting it. Very cute!
What cute little owls!
I love owls! This was a real treat. Thank you. 🙂
Of course owls are similar to cats – they both like to prey on mice. YOLO = You Obviously Like Owls.
Is there anything more intense than the stare of an owl? Be afraid…
I love owls, loved this video! Must read up on why owls can move their heads around–seemingly completely around.
