Well, not really, as, unlike the totally mercenary PuffHo, The New Republic actually pays some stipendiary emoluments to their writers. TNR wants to beef up its science-related online stuff, so I’ve agreed to allow them to cross-post some of my efforts from time to time. The first one, a slightly modified version of my piece on Rupert Sheldrake, the BBC, and the Guerrilla Skeptics on Wikipedia, is now up at their site.
Don’t worry, though—you always get to read it first.
Great! Your waning integrity is our gain!
That’s great! And thanks for not undercutting other writers by writing free for people who would make some serious money off you, given the number of clicks you (and your respondents) would generate at HuffPo. The race to the bottom speeds ever onward.
I know Jerry will have read this, and many others here too, but for those who haven’t:
“Slaves of the internet, unite”

New Republic even called WEIT a website!
I thought your name is Jerry A. Coyne, and not JERRY A. COYNE.
Congratulations! (or is that CONGRATULATIONS?)
Shout it from the ROOFTOPS!
Glad you’re getting compensated Jerry.
“stipendiary emoluments” = cowboy boot discounts?
A guy’s gotta eat, eh, and keep up the strength with those noms. Writin’, thinkin’ and stuff is hard work!
Congrats!
This is good news. Good and wholesome doses of evidence based reasoning should be widely dispersed to the public. Any bit helps to counter the apologists and woo-meisters that are so common out there.
You’re not a sell out until you take Templeton money, and that’s not likely to happen. TNR will get some hard hitting stories I suspect.
It is nice to see you have sold out at a good price :). I noticed that your words on the New Republic have an added gravitas – the wonders of using a serif font.
“stipendiary emoluments”
Is that some kind of boot leather dressing?
😉
Heck, I wouldn’t mind if you wrote some things exclusively for them and just provided us with a link.
Just found this.
The comments below the published article are woeful, based on ignorance of science and an arrogance that they can rise above the fray and see it from another perspective. Those comments have shaken me, re the way intelligent lay people see science. Shudder…… I think I’ll drown my sorrows cups of caffeine.
Jerry, suggest you ask your WEIT readership to analyse the responses.
