    1. I dunno. If it was staged, the guy had super cojones – look how close the sea lion came to his hand, and he was holding it pretty close to the tail.

      1. Sealions can be pretty skilled at feeding from the hand without biting the hand that feeds it.
        Have a look on youtube.

    2. Yes, staged. Their acting throughout is suspicious, but listen carefully to their comments at the end.

      1. Mmm, OK, and also note that unlike the bearded guy, the one about to be ripped off is holding the tail from above, which is a completely unnatural way to hold a fish in that kind of pose.

    1. Yes, Coryphaena hippurus, Mahimahi. Excellent light-flavored and textured food fish. Their colors when freshly caught are spectacular.

  1. Not staged. The guy dressed in white wittnessed it and came over to look down in the water under the pier to see if he could see the thief. Why else would he look? Even the gull reacted.

    1. I didn’t say everyone was in on it.
This is how it works: These guys have either fed sea lions by hand before or observed others feeding them. They decide to stage an event where a sea lion, trained to accept fish from them, seems to steal it from them.

  2. You can’t stage that. Sea lions have free will (i.e., they don’t obey humans). Are these the San Diego sportfishing docks? Looks familiar. In CA, we call these fish “dorado” same as in Mexico. In restaurants (same as in Hawaii), they’re usually called “Mahi mahi”. We stopped calling them dolphinfish years ago because too many untutored folks thought we were killing and eating Flipper the dolphin (a mammal).
