  1. I’m guessing its adaptive for the spider-as-prey rather than spider-as-predator. Most of the spider’s prey is going to try and avoid the web if the see it, regardless of whethre they see the spider itself. So this must be an adaptation against hungry birds (and the like) looking for a spider snack.

    1. Yes, I agree. We have spiders who live in a rolled up leaf in the middle of their web, achieving a similar result in a quite different way. Maybe this spider’s ancestors ran out of leaves! 😉
