Some readers have reported that they either have to sign in with WordPress to comment here now, or simply can’t comment at all. I don’t know whether they’ve changed their policy, but I will make inquiries. In the meantime, if other readers know how to help the ones who can’t sign in, post below.
UPDATE: Here’s the answer I got, which is only marginally lucid:
We recently updated our commenting system. Now, if someone tries to comment with an email address attached to a WordPress.com account, they’ll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.
If a commenter can’t remember their WordPress.com credentials, they can reset their password by entering their email address here:
http://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
If they’re trying to comment with an email address that’s not connected to a WordPress.com account, they won’t need to sign up for WordPress.com in order to comment (unless you enabled this option in your Settings). [JAC: that option isn’t enabled.}
I guess, then, that some of the trouble comes from those of you who have WordPress accounts, but I’m not sure that explains all of it.
While we’re on the subject of WordPress problems…any chance you can have a word with somebody who can the emails can get cleaned up?
In particular, people’s replies come through as one giant paragraph. It’s annoying, and makes it hard to read.

Testing…1…2…3
I had to go to wordpress.com and log in (tiny login way up top).
I just followed what you did. It works!
I have had trouble posting comments in the recent past, but I think I have now figured it out and won’t have these issues in the future.
I’m here now but I’ve had to change my name before it would let me post.
Testing with a fake e-mail. With my regular e-mail it says I have to be logged in.
OK. Now that I’m logged in on my WordPress blog, let’s see if it allows my comment with my real e-mail address.
Yeah. So my guess is that if your e-mail is associated with a WordPress account, you have to log in before you comment. If you don’t have a WordPress account, then you can go ahead and post.
(Presumably they’re trying to prevent people from impersonating others? Or just trying to force us to let them keep better track of what we do . . .)
Yeah, this is ass-backwards….
testing with fake email
I had the same problem, and when I was logged in to WordPress, it had my old user and blog info. Yeah, something changed.
test.
This worked after I signed in at WordPress. Before that, not so much.
Yeah, I just switched from my .mac to .me address and it let me comment (.mac associated with wordpress, but I don’t like the username restrictions they impose)
My work e-mail has two versions so if this works…
It does, but now I have a ghastly red icon… yeuch.
Apparently the e-mail doesn’t have to be real. You can just make one up to post.
But doesn’t Jerry have to moderate?
Am I in?
How weird. I don’t normally use my word press account to comment here as wordpress doesn’t allow me to use my real name (it doesn’t like spaces or hyphens). When I tried logging in to wordpress, it wouldn’t accept me using my normal wordpress account name, yet now, for some strange reason, it has me logged in using my real name! I’m stuffed if I understand computers.
It would be unkind to suggest that the folks at WordPress may not understand computers either. 🙂
(There should of course be a ‘y’ on the end of my nickname, but WP cuts it off at 20 letters).
Yes, & now unless I use my WordPress thingy I have a yucky red avatar. I hate red. (Was once red haired you see so it looks bad on me)
This is getting on my fucking nerves! I’m shown as signed in here on this discussion but when I try to add a comment to another discussion, I’m not logged in and wordpress refuses to accept my username! Grrrrrr!!!
I never had a problem, but then I usually stay logged into my wordpress account. This does currently have the nice feature that if somebody replies to this post, I will see an indicator on the wordpress header line. That “0” toward the right of the header will become a “1” or such.
Okay, I am commenting mostly to test that comments are still working for me.
Huh. Never noticed that indicator number. That is kinda handy.
It’s seems to be a recent enhancement. I like it.
In this case, I saw the “1”. I clicked the “1” and a popup told me what event it was reporting. If I click again, the popup goes away and the count reverts to 0.
Now, if someone tries to comment with an email address attached to a WordPress.com account, they’ll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.
The obvious question that comes to mind will be:
WHY?
Yes.
All of a sudden I really don’t like WordPress at all.
Putting this here, since this seems to be the rag on WP sub-thread:
Used to post as JS1685, now I have to use my blog name: musical beef. Which is dumb.
ALSO! – has anyone else found the new mobile format vastly inferior to the old one (switch occurred maybe 6 mos ago)? Now, when replies are nested, each one takes up more space, so there is less room for nesting. This also leves less room for text, resulting in towering comments of one word per line. Also, the old version nested them by means of different colored placards – it was so easy to follow who was replying to whom.
Additionally, the blockquote feature is now useless. It appears simply as italicized text. Worse, if text was italicized in the original quote, it will be un-italicized in the blockquote.
Srsly, WP, what gives? I’m no programmer, but even I can see this new format sucks canal water.
Yes, what a stupid extra loop to have to go through, just because we are (were) WordPress fans.
Darn, I wrote a comment using a different email address, and now it says my comment is being held for moderation! Considering how fast things can move here, and how busy Jerry must be, that is really bad.
Indeed. It seems like someone at WordPress was trying to get an entry at thedailywtf.com or something. It´s like a security guard at the White House who will let any random passer-by in, but if Obama or Clinton show up they have to first produce an identity card.
Well, that was a pain in the butt…
I can comment here, apparently, but even when I log in at other sites, I can no longer post comments. PITA–and pointless.
some of CNN’s comment threads were giving the same message.
The same thing happened to me. I kept trying and finally got Through. I checked on my status but nothing wrong showed up. Thanks for checking.
Just checking
Testing…
Hmmm, I haven’t tried to comment here for a long while.
Test.

Same problem here and at Jonathan Turley’s website. I switched email addresses and browsers.
Well this is cuckoo.
I found a wordpress acount I didn’t know I even had. It gives me an alias I don’t remember or want either.
check
Test. Wouldn’t let me post as I normally do, so I logged in with my standard email and one of my never used user names came up.
I really don’t want to loose my icon, ’cause I did it special for this site… but… trying back-up email to see what happens.
well that works.. lets see what my alter ego would look like…
not logged in, alt email address
now, it’s in a snit and WON’T let me login with the identity it showed for me. Giving up.
OK, now it’s just messing with me. Fine. Whatever.
Sorry…testing again. 🙁
…well that worked after several tries and a reset. But yeah…that was real troublesome.
I’ve thought it’s been this way for a while.
Test
just a test
no problem
testing…testing….
OK, now to go re-type the longish comment I left on another thread that got eaten when WP decided to challenge me. Is this punishment for being a WP user?
Unable to comment to real posts as of whatever changes they’ve made, so let’s try a meaningless one.
Suggest! When it doesn’t matter.
Typo… “suggest” should’ve been “success”.
I do have a helpful piece of WordPress workings for others having a problem:
Logging in properly, making changes to your profile, etc. does not apply immediately. So logging-leaving-logging in doesn’t mean that those updates and then successful commenting won’t work, if you just wait an hour!
For me, it seemed like the better part of one to effect change.
Testing. I can use an alternate e-mail, but then my Gravatar doesn’t show. So you poor people would miss all my kitteh pix. I guess this will work, but it sorta seems a pain in the ass. Thanks for the update, Jerry.

my computer logged this in as spam so I’ve only just read it. Yeah – I used to have problems. Not sure why I don’t anymore, but I understand computers much less than I do life.
