Norfolk eaglets doing well

April 28, 2011 • 3:54 pm

So far, so good. The three eaglets have had a thorough medical exam (including x-rays), have been given a clean bill of health, and, in temporary quarters, are nomming fish like there’s no tomorrow:

The Virginia Wildlife Center is building an outdoor nest, which has proven to be a lot of work, and the eagles will be moved to their outdoor enclosure tomorrow. The whole procedure is documented here. There will also be a webcam, so we can watch them until their release.

  1. It’s still a terrible situation all the way ’round, but I’m glad the VWC is pulling out all the stops to ameliorate things as best as can be hoped for.

It looks like the kids (and hopefully dad) will outlive the trauma and hopefully live long enough to have many seasons with the trauma a distant or nonexistent memory.

    1. Ben – it’s extremely unlikely to be a memory at all. They don’t have that kind of brain. Very few animals do, and raptors are not especially brain-heavy among birds.

  2. How could they not be in good health – mom & dad were outstanding parents! Does anyone know how the dad is faring?

    Ophelia who? 😉

The Wildlife Center has really been thrust into the limelight, and is doing a fairly good job of living up to the legacy. They don’t have a webcam yet, but they have multiple informative daily updates with great pix and video. We actually know more (medically) about the eaglets now than we ever would have known if they had grown up the way we expected them to.

If you didn’t follow it Wednesday, you should read the transcribed Q&A with Ed Clark. It made me feel a whole lot better.

I, too, wonder how dad’s doing? The webcam has been turned off. That’s still the saddest part. Momma probably never knew what hit her.

    1. Ed Clark said on Wednesday that the male would get on with his life in a day or two.

Nearly all animals live in the present. I think we can assume he’s not pining for the eaglets now.

    2. (Reading Ed Clark made me feel better too, though it also made me feel a bit sheepish about projecting. But then I knew I was projecting…but thought it was ok for awhile. I still felt a bit sheepish though.)
