In my opinion a gray squirrel would be much rangier than this and have a longer tail even if shaved. It doesn’t look like a red squirrel or a possum, either. How about some unfamiliar breed of dog?
The ears are little round ears like a bear. What on earth is this creature? I can see why the people in Lafayette were baffled! Has anyone mentioned a muskrat?
It looks to me like a squirrel that has lost all the hair on its tail. Hard to tell the size from the photo, though.
This may sound stupid but, big gray squirrel with shaved tail? But then who would do that? Anyway, I submit this for the way-out-there award.
Actually it looks completely hairless and squirrel looks about right. Mexican hairless squirrel? (or regular squirrel on a really really bad hair day)
The tail looks somewhat short for a gray squirrel and the body is thick. Could it be a hairless or mangy marmot?
Looks like a hairless woodchuck.
A ground hog with mange.
Lost incarnate soul lookin for a genuine Tea Party.
Since we don’t have a positive ID on the creature, I think It’s safe to assume that we are looking at a day walking Chupacabra.
damn! you beat me to the punch.
+1 for Chupacabra.
maybe a hairless opposum??

Marmot or prairies dog, based on the body shape and the location. But I don’t know why it’s hairless…
Not a great picture, head like a rodent and body of a cat. Maybe a Sphynx cat? Google says there are a few breeders in Indiana.

I take that back. It can’t be a muskrat.
It may not be indigenous to Indiana. I think it may be an escaped illegal alien.
Looks like some kind of rodent, what ever it is it reminds me of eeyore, there for is very cute! i wonder does it bite? i think i want one 🙂
Wow, nobody has identified this thing yet? A quick Google search netted these pictures of something that looks identical to the critter above.

Unfortunately, there is no information on the pics.
It looks as though this critter has also been making guest appearances in Rochester, NY.
