!!Important poll!!

April 10, 2012 • 6:18 pm

You know I wouldn’t ask you to crash a poll unless something truly important was at stake. There are enough readers here, I think, to influence this poll at Pajiba, which was clearly created by a wrong-thinking person:

Why are some people dog people, and some people cat people, and why are those two constituencies so hostile toward baby people?

I don’t understand these phenomena, myself. Personally, I am anti-cute puppy and adorable kitten, and I believe that devoting even a fraction of our unlimited Internet space to these two subjects is antithetical to good taste. I think it’s dopey. I currently write for a site that I love despite the fact that Corgi Fridays is a popular weekly feature, and where a post comparing dogs to “Mad Men” characters was one of the most popular of last week. I respect it, but I don’t get it. But show me an adorable baby, and I will awww with the best of them.

You know what to do. Vote here.  If cats win by noon tomorrow, I’ll give away an autographed copy of WEIT to any  an autographed copy of WEIT to one randomly-selected reader who says he/she has voted for kittehs in the comments below.  Be honest!  Just give your handle and say that you voted for teh kittehs.

Thank God Ceiling Cat they didn’t include squids. . . .

UPDATE: Oh dear, I meant ONE autographed copy to a randomly selected reader among those who votes for cats. I have only a dozen paperbacks left!  Apologies for the misunderstanding.

      1. I will, in memoriam of my lovely 2 year-old cat, Charlie, who died 2 weeks ago; don’t know the cause… C’mon everybody! Let’s do it for Charlie.

      2. The situation seems to deteriorate again.

Bit too close for comfort. Maybe you could put a refresher post on the story today with caturday felid, get all those weekend surfers involved.

        Hope we win!

    1. If only you could see my cat, Lucky. He does the best owl face of any cat I ever met! He totally has the look down, tilting his ears just so.

  1. Fact, Kittens are cuter than dogs, babies and all of theeabove = VoTed.. Although this poll ratings are still not the cat’s meow– 33% puppies, 29% kittens 🙁

    1. I want to note that I already have a copy of WEIT. Of course, it’s not signed, but since I’m trying to start a branch of the Secular Student Alliance at Florida Atlantic University (we’re not official, yet, but getting close… just looking for an adviser at this point), I’ll just do everything in my power to get you to come out here and speak about evolution and WEIT.

Then I can meet you and get you to sign my copy, instead of being greedy and hoping for a second copy that happens to be signed.

Please give the signed copy to someone who doesn’t actually have a copy of the book. Thank you.

  2. I voted for teh kittehs. And that photo of the dog licking the baby’s face! Do they know where that tongue has just been? Louis Pasteur’s life was all in vain.

    1. I’m not so sure that Pasteur spent much time licking either babies, or his ass. Or are you trying to imply he had an unseemly relationship with a baby-licking dog?

    1. Whoa! I mis-typed. What I meant was one copy will go to a randomly selected reader who says he/she has voted the right way. Thanks for pointing out my error, which I immediately corrected lest I be bankrupted.

  3. Happily voted for the kitties. Puppies have their charm, but the cuteness is compromised be the goofiness.

  4. April 11, 1135am, Australia time

    It is gaining!

    Cheers – Daniel

    1. Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur. Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, pur, pur, pur.

  5. I voted for bloody cats depite my preference for dogs. My wife loves cats, but I just want a copy of the book. LOLCAT

    1. Heretic!!

I voted for the kittehs, and kittehs are currently leading the poll!

      Consider it pharyngulated.

If they included otters, it would have been much tougher to choose.

  6. I like doggies but I voted for the kittehs for a chance at a free book. The dogs will forgive me just because they don’t hold grudges … I might have to do some butt-sniffing to make up for voting for the kittehs though.

  7. Personally, I am anti-cute puppy and adorable kitten…

…and apparently anti-grammar as well. What exactly does an “anti-cute puppy” look like? (Or am I better off not knowing?)

  8. I have just joined the 34% who chose correctly, up from 27% before you made mention of this sacrilegious poll. A none of the above? You mean there are non-catists that exist? It’s a good thing Ceiling Cat is merciful . . . that’s all I can say.

  9. As much as I’d like a signed copy of WEIT, I couldn’t bring myself to vote for cats. I couldn’t even bring myself to lie and say that I did…

  10. Voted for kittens.

But no need to send the book. I’ve read it (several times) and have even purchased copies for those I care about.

Thanks though for the kind thought.

  11. I voted for kittens (I am a so far silent Ceiling Cat worshipper hoping to be randomly selected)

  12. Hold on a minute: adorable pictures of babies – 5%? ONLY 5%????

What about natural selection? I don’t Adam and Eve it.

I want an evolutionary biologist’s analysis of this. If around 30% are irresistibly attracted to cutesy pictures of our feline and canine friends, do we have some sort of hypothesis emerging for Darwinian bestiality? I demand an explanation.

    1. Natural selection requires only that you bond with your own babies, not with random Internet photos of someone else’s babies.

      1. I adopted kids; fell instantly in love with my daughter who was then 13 months old when I first met her. I can’t explain it; I did it, frankly, to please my then partner – now wife. I had no conscious paternal feelings until that point.

Birth parents talk about overwhelming feelings of love when their child is born; I think I felt the same thing on meeting my adopted daughter Jamie. The French have a phrase, ‘bouleverser’, sort of bowled over and everything becomes different. There it is; that’s what I felt.

        1. Actually I had a similar experience a few years ago when my wife and I volunteered to host a 17-year-old ballet student from out of town. Up to that point we were contentedly childless and had no particular expectations for the relationship. But within a couple of months it was like a switch had been thrown in my head, and nothing has been the same since. I never used to cry at sentimental movies; now I do it all the time.

          1. I wasn’t ‘contentedly childless’, I was bordering on the ecstacically childless. If you want, or need, to adopt, then adopt. When you see the life chances of so many kids up for adoption, it makes you pretty angry.

          2. I would adopt, if I could. Meanwhile, the theory you requested: Humans are overcrowded due to overpopulation, so decreased fertiility (via lack of interest in children, homosexuality, or overwhelming other interests) helps control and perhaps, eventually, decrease population overcrowding. Maybe Rebiblican gun laws are also part of the mix, though they’d work better if the guns backfired…

          3. Hitchens once gave the one-word comment, “China”, in response to some incoherent historo/theological gobbledy-gook spouted by D’Souza (not that I’m calling your reply ‘nonsense’, Doc, nor comparing you to our Christian friend). But, yeah, population over-crowding and State policies, you get the drift.

    1. BTW, before I close that window….

      1. Would you have voted for the kittehs if they were running through a field of hempenstein? At least, cats appreciate good herb, though catnip/catmint is their favorite.

  13. Voted 3 times for =^..^= (ascii cat…ascat?)
As of 9:07 CDT, it was cats 35%, dogs 31%.

  14. Voted for the kittehs, of course.

What is the 9%” none of the above” all about? Who could possibly resist kittens, with puppies and babies a close second?

  15. Major premise: I don’t have your book
Minor premise: But I want to read it

Ergo: I voted for the kitties.

  16. I voted for the kitties and I’ve got your book, but I want a signed copy I can shelve next to my signed copy of Hitchens’ God Is Not Great

  17. Kittens leading @ 36%

I voted for kittens, but please note I have no need for another WEIT book

  18. Cat’s are up to 37% and clearly in the lead! I voted for them, but already bought a copy of WEIT — if I should win (which I never do) please give the book to someone who needs it more.

  19. I voted for the kitthes too although I can be swayed by puppehs too. I set aside my occasional indescretion with the dogs. I live with both and they live with each other in harmony…most of the time. I will send a picture of Bella and her dog friend. Bella is always prettier than the grubby dog.

  20. Voted 4 dah kittehs, though that first puppy pic came close to changing my mind…

  21. I voted for kittens and I mean it. They’re cute! However, I do prefer the psycho kitten videos. I have a crazy cat here at the house. The kids found him running out of the woods and I couldnt send him to a shelter. He’s a good cat but he is nuts.. I’m not kidding.

  22. yeah, well, i voted for puppies, and not just because i already PURCHASED a copy of the book.

  23. I voted for kittens. They’re cute although I prefer the videos of the psycho kittens. You know what I’m talking about, the ones who have a short circuit fire off. lol I have one of those cats. He’s fine one second then rampaging around attacking non-existant things the next. Should have named him screwball…The kids named him Dragon….

  24. I voted for teh kittehs (even though I really prefer babies) to give me a crack at the book; even though I own a copy and have already read it, I’d be happy to give it to someone who needs it (I know *lots* of creationists).

  25. Yikes, the kittehs are in the lead – I’m predicting a cramped signing hand…and I voted for the felines.

  26. Kitteh’s 38% v. Puppies 29%…

    Babies 5%.

Man… apparently babies ain’t that cute. Ha!

I can’t wait for a WEIT copy…. If luck is with me that is.
