This makes me happy

I am sure you can guess what this photo shows:

Yep, my babies are trotting around in the snow. Fortunately, they have a kind patron who feeds them twice a day.  Armon and Vashti are still here, and what reason would they have to go, given that they are fed two big square meals a day: nutritious duck pellets for main and tasty freeze-dried mealworms for dessert?

They are looking good, and Vashti seems positively plump.

    1. I saw this comment and the next one and merged them into “Looking after otters. That’s the ticket!” Which I suppose is also true.

  1. Glad to find this bit of happiness in my email today. Sunday I saw a juvenile otter in our coast range creek. In my culture, being near an otter is a matter of good fortune.

    1. Naah, they have countercurrent distribution of circulation in their leg. A great adaptation (look it up if you do not know). Their feet and legs are kept pretty warm, even when swimming in frigid water.

  2. Not wanting to steal any thunder, but this is on happy-making topic for Return of the Ducks.

The bufflehead ducks have returned to the storm-water retention ponds in the subdivision built behind our street. The ice melted out only last week and it’s below freezing again today with strong cold wind but at least two ducks are swimming around, along with several mallard pairs. The buffleheads will continue north to their breeding range in a few weeks but they are a delight to enjoy however long they stay. Last spring we had a half dozen goldeneyes, also transient. No sign of them yet.
