We have about half a dozen photo contributions, though I’m trying to conserve them. But today we have some great blue herons (Ardea herodias) and some green herons (Butorides virescens) from Martin Riddle. Martin’s captions are indented, and you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.
Here are photos of Great Blue Herons taken at my retirement community, Brooksby Village, in Peabody, Ma. We have two ponds with lots of fish for these voracious hunters.
We have at least one active Green Heron on our retirement community campus, Brooksby Village in Peabody ,Ma. Sometimes the bird cooperates and I can get decent photos. Here are several:

Great blues are such majestic dinosaurs. They must have a wide geographic range in North America in that they have been common everywhere I’ve lived. There are some amazing nesting colonies here in Western Washington, where dozens of nests have taken over clusters of tall trees. The nests are reoccupied year after year and are well-known to locals. There’s one off route 522 in Kenmore and another in Marymoor Park in Redmond. The first is just off a busy arterial and the second is at a popular dog park. They don’t seem to worry about the constant disturbances. (I’m not revealing secret nesting sites. These are well known.)
Thank you for your post!
Gorgeous
I remember that Green Heron! Glad for the reprise!
I love the photos of them flying. The neck stretched out and the whole being lifting up. Thank you. What great neighbors to have.
Very cool! Thank you for sharing.
Two of my favorite birds. We used to see them all the time in Minnesota, where we lived on a pond. We only see them rarely now.
Beautiful!
