Readers’ wildlife photos

Send in your good photos, please, as we’re running low. Thanks!

Today’s batch of bird photos comes from reader Christopher Moss (sent Aug. 30), and were taken in Nova Scotia, near the border with New Brunswick. Christopher’s captions and IDs are indented, and you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.

I was up early watering the plants on the back deck and saw quite a few visitors. There are three male wood ducks (Aix sponsa) at the moment. They are being shepherded around by a female mallard twice their size. They are quite shy and still don’t have their full colours after molting:

A pair of Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) tolerated me, though with one watching from a tree while the other fished:

And for the first time we have a Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). It arrived yesterday and say in a tree for hours surveying the pond:

It was back this morning and was brave enough to go for a swim. The kingfisher now has competition for the fish in the pond!:
I’m very glad this camera and lens both have image stabilisation and they work well together: my hands were a bit shaky after filling, carrying and pouring 46 watering cans!

  1. Beautiful! A lot of nice blues* to chase away the blues.**

*the color (or is it colour?)
    **the state of mind

  2. What a peaceful back deck you have. I love the photos. It’s instantly calming to see your pond with birds.
    Thank you.
