Here are some photos from a new contributor, Loretta Michaels. Her IDs and identifications (the binomials are from me) are indented, and you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.
These were taken in Oct/Nov 2024 on the Upper Amazon in Peru, as part of a boat trip around the region. If you wanted to add this to my description, I use a Sony DSC-RX10 M4 (a fantastic camera that for some reason Sony has discontinued, much to the disappointment of fans.)
Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus):
Plum-Throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana):
Large-billed tern (Phaetusa simplex):
Black Collared Hawk (Busarellus nigricollis):
Squirrel monkey (Saimiri sp.):
Another Black Collared Hawk:
Harpy Eagle (I think; Harpia harpyja):
Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax):
Great Black Hawk (Buteogallus urubitinga):
Yellow-rumped cacique (Cacicus cela):
Oriole Blackbird (Gymnomystax mexicanus):
Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris):

Stunning.
Thank you, Loretta. Lot’s of hawks!
Thank you for all these good photos. I suggest that the bird identified tentatively as Harpy Eagle is a Yellow-headed Caracara, Milvago chimachima.
Yes, that is definitely not a Harpy Eagle.
Beautiful photos! Thanks to Loretta for submitting them and to Jerry for hosting and curating this feature. I’m sure the controversial topics get more comments but I’d suggest the nature-related posts create more joy!

Agree!
Pretty sure that is not a harpy eagle!
Very nice! Lovely lighting, and I really like the bokeh in the first one.
Nice pictures! Love the Squirrel Monkey and the majestic Great Black Hawk, and the scary Roadside Hawk and, well, all the rest, too!
Also loved the Great Black Hawk— the almost white semicircles around the breast feathers made them stand out so nicely.
Made me smile, thank you!
My favorite: the Yellow-rumped cacique
What a beautiful series of photos!
Thanks!
Excellent
Terrific photos – thanks! Besides those mentioned, the Oriole blackbird is a real stunner.
As a fellow Sony RX10.4 enthusiast, I even bought a second one when I heard they were being discontinued.
Thanks for the kind comments, folks. (I would’ve responded sooner but I spend Mondays caring for injured and orphaned wildlife, and with spring baby season upon us, it’s about to get intense so lots of prep work needed.) I’m afraid I failed to read Jerry’s instructions on how to post (w/common names, Latin names, etc), so probably caused him some consternation, so he was generous to post them. As for the eagle, you’re right, that’s not a Harpy. The Caracara sounds far more plausible. And yes, the Sony RX10.4 is a great camera, I’m bewildered that Sony discontinued it last year. For people like me – photography enthusiasts who used to buy all the kit, the various lenses, etc., then got tired of the outlay and weight, and just wanted a good all around single tool, the Sony was perfect. (Hubby still does all the lenses and such, and is a much better photographer.)
