Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
If only his followers would open a book now and then.
I really prefer “Gnu Atheism” to “New Atheism”. It highlights the silliness of atheism being “new” rather than “old” to the title. I think I will use it from now on instead of “New Atheism”.
I would be “splitting my sides with laughter” too, but can a rotund object be said to have sides? I fear I shall simply burst, and then where would I be?
Gnu Atheism refers to a 21st century movement in atheism. The term is applied, affectionately, to outspoken individuals who share their ideas freely on the interwebs without of restricting them to best-selling books or academic journal articles. These include PZ Myers, Sam Harris, Daniel C. Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Victor J. Stenger and Christopher Hitchens. They and other supporters of the Gnu Atheism movement are but critics of religion. They state that human knowledge has reached the point where it is no longer appropriate to base truth claims or moral positions on religion, superstition, or religion-based fanaticism.
So wonderfully silly, I am splitting my sides with laughter.
The Lion of Judah will sort out those Gnu Atheists!
(if he actually exists, which I have to rudely point out is rather unlikely)
Revelation 5:5, you buncha heathen!
“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”

When I saw the title of this post, I thought you’d be talking about this GNU.
But it would be even better if it were this one!
As a Gnu Emacs user, that’s actually what gave me the idea (although technically that kind of Gnu is pronounced differently).
GNU Emacs is God.

Where’s “Tom Johnson”? You need to add a little weasel eavesdropping in the corner.
… & as Flanders & Swann sang
“I’m a gnu a-g-nother gnu
I wish I could g-nash my teeth at you”.
Exactly what was going through my mind too.
Hahahahahaha.
Thanks, doc, I needed that.
the one on the right is a sockpuppeting oryx
GNU – Gnu not unicorn.
Nice one.
How about “GNU’s Not Uncivil”? (context here)
I eagarly await Chris Mooney’s “elevation” of this incontrovertible photographic proof to a post on the incivility of New Atheists… 🙂
Lolz! Strident Gnu iz strident.
Racist.
They prefer to be called “Connochaetan-Americans”, thank you very much.
GA’s: So strident! So confrontational! So shrill!
How ghastly!
Who let such Bohemian rapscallions in here?
Oh. I thought I saw that, but I didn’t riddle it – I didn’t kgnow the right prognunciation then.
Thanks!
When I read the headline, I thought Hurd, not herd…
Damn unemployed atheist wildebeest got no culture.
Well, there’s good gnus, and there’s bad gnus…
no gnus is good gnus.
This isn’t gnus. Besides, I’m the one on the left.
What a wonderful new descriptor for outspoken atheists!
It may be, though, that the accommodationists prefer the english translation for “wildebeest”:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildebeest
Come to think of it, I’ve never heard of a gnu believing in god(s).
Is gnu atheism unanimous?
I think a lot of them just follow the herd.
Gnu Atheist says,
“Religion is the opiate of the mooses.”
groan. . . .
I just gnu people would try to be punny. Now all we need is Keyboard Cat playing us off with a kazoo.
I would be “splitting my sides with laughter” too, but can a rotund object be said to have sides? I fear I shall simply burst, and then where would I be?
Oh, go on.
It’s wafer thin.
I like this (ok, “my”) definition (previously posted here) of Gnu Atheism, based on the Wikipedia entry for New Atheist:
spelt G-N-U? The gnicest piece of gnature in the zoo?
Or – No gnus is good gnus?
Would ‘wildebeest atheist’ do as well?

The non-gnu may be wrong, but they’ve got a better sense of humour than the gnu…
