I am a geneticist not a philosopher. Matter has integrative levels of organization (cells, organs, organs systems, organisms etc). New properties emerge arise at higher levels that are not predictable from studying lower levels. Subatomic physics tells us almost nothing about organisms. Under this schema life, itself probably is an emergent property. At some level “free will” might also emerge.
