Every planet in one photo (except Pluto)

If you don’t think Pluto is a planet, you won’t be bothered by this, though it wouldn’t be visible anyway. This is yesterday’s “Astronomy Picture of the Day” (APOD), and there’s one every day put up by NASA at this site. We really should start our day by having a looks.

Reader Susan called my attention to this one, which I liked because it shows all the planets (save Pluto!) in a single photo! Do enlarge it by clicking on it—twice in succession to make it really big. The NASA caption is this:

Explanation: Imaged on June 20 2022, comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) shares this wide telescopic field of view with open star cluster IC 4665 and bright star Beta Ophiuchi, near a starry edge of the Milky Way. On its maiden voyage to the inner Solar System from the dim and distant Oort cloud, this comet PanSTARRS was initially spotted over five years ago, in May 2017. Then it was the most distant active inbound comet ever found, discovered when it was some 2.4 billion kilometers from the Sun. That put it between the orbital distances of Uranus and Saturn. Hubble Space Telescope observations indicated the comet had a large nucleus less than 18 kilometers in diameter. Now visible in small telescopes C/2017 K2 will make its closest approach to planet Earth on July 14 and closest approach to the Sun this December. Its extended coma and developing tail are seen here at a distance of some 290 million kilometers, a mere 16 light-minutes away.

  1. Very beautiful. Is Neptune really visible though? At least on my monitor, I couldn’t see it even when fully enlarged. The lack of stars in the image suggests that Neptune, which would look just like a star because it is so small and far away, has not been picked up in this image.

    On my favorite sky analyzer, Stellarium (free to download), I see many stars near Neptune that are brighter than Neptune, yet they are not visible in this image. Maybe the image has been compressed and stars have been lost….

    1. I see on my iPad what could be Neptune just below the space between the U and the N, about the height of the letters down. If you don’t see it there on your monitor I’m probably seeing artifact.

  2. At first I couldn’t find Uranus so close to the moon, so thought maybe you were pulling the claim that all seven were there out of … oh, never mind me. Sorry.
