All of these photos were taken this week during a two-hour walk at the San Joaquin Wildlife Preserve in Irvine, California.
American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana):
American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos):
According to Google search, a group of pelicans is called a “brief”, “pod”, “pouch”, “scoop”, or “squadron”. Choose your favorite. Here the American White Pelicans were joined by a seagull.
Cinnamon Teal (Spatula cyanoptera):
Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus):
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos):
Osprey (Pandion haliaetus):
Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis):
These Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were combative and performed some crazy aerial acrobatics:
Western Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis):
Amazing photos! Does anyone know what the story is with the beak of the Avocet?
Avocets use their curved beaks while wading to scoop up insects and crustaceans.
Nice BIFs.
Thank you.
Nice Roadrunner shots!
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful photos Bob, thanks!
Great photos!
Those are marvelous. The swallow battle shots must have been exceptionally challenging.
Fantastic photos, Bob! Thanks. And as for a plethora of pelicans, I’d say ‘squadron’ fits the bill. 😛
