I’m seriously low on photos; you don’t want this feature to disappear, do you? (I have about a week’s worth left.) Please send in your good ones!
Today’s batch comes from reader Bob Fritz. His captions are indented, and click on the screenshot to enlarge the photos:
Here are some bird photographs taken at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, California. The reserve has a mix of salt and freshwater marshes with many hiking trails, and hosts a wide variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles.Rock Pigeon (Columba livia):
The Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) struts and spreads its wings while hunting for fish. In the first picture the left leg is bent back, causing it to appear like a pole behind the bird.
The Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) flies low to catch its prey, with its narrow beak gliding through the water.
Bolsa Chica at sunset. View facing north-west, with Pacific Coast Highway on the left.
Great pictures and almost poetic descriptions!
Beautiful photos!
A very fine set! I’ve never seen skimmers, and someday I should.
They look bizarre!
Great pictures. Can someone tell me how one submits photos?\
Google Jerry’s name and you’ll find his email address. Submit by email.
thank you
Nice photos!
I love the sunset shot. Brings back memories of walking the Orange County beaches in the 90s when I was working in Long Beach remotely, on the company’s nickel. I ate well! (The Abbey tavern and Walt’s Wharf were favorites and walking distance from my hotel.)
Hi Bob, can you give us a summary of your gear? Thanks!
Hi James: The pandemic has afforded me time to review older photographs – this set is from 2007 – 2012. The Rock Pigeon was taken with a Canon 5D. The other photos used a Canon 5D Mark II. All bird shots were taken with a Canon 100-400 telephoto (mostly @ 400mm) and the sunset used a Canon 24-105. Processing in Adobe Lightroom with help from Topaz Sharpen AI.
Thanks Bob! I’m going through my old catalogue too (while creating more images by scanning my Dad’s negatives).
Very nice photos…great action, sharpness and colors. Thanks!
Nice set. The Bolsa Chica reserve is a great bird-watching site.
Goodness PCC (E) on the photos. They wax and wane, contribution wise…
But SOME of us are a little intimidated by the high quality of what you publish – we’re scared of sending in our own modest works.
I have a cell phone taken stick insect from the 14th floor (!) of my NYC apartment – it’s presence is impressive – but when I think of sending it in I look at ANOTHER perfect Antarctic vista sunset or Spielberg-ready Jurassic Park insect series*…. I get a tad intimidated….
