SNL does the Trump/Biden debate

Several readers sent me a link to SNL’s spoof of the recent Trump/Biden debate. Chris Wallace is played by Beck Bennett Trump by Alec Baldwin, and Biden by Jim Carrey (I didn’t recognize Carrey at first!) I’m not sure who plays Kamala Harris, as I almost never watch Saturday Night Live. When I have seen it, I can only compare it to the early glory days with John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Akroyd, and the other greats.

This bit is pretty good, but not outstanding, which exemplifies the whole show to me these days. The last two minutes, however, aren’t half bad.

  1. I thought all of the characters were played well, especially with the addition of Jim Carrey. I thought the skit was mediocre and they could have done a better job.

  2. Harris is played by Maya Rudolph (former cast member of SNL).
You may have seen her in the movie Bridesmaids (which you, PCCE, should know since it also features Rose Byrne, and apart from that is also a very good comedy).

    1. Daughter of the late, great songbird Minnie Riperton of the famous five-octave vocal range, and of the hit song k”Lovin’ You.”

I saw Ms. Riperton live in club in the mid-Seventies, a couple months before the tune above broke big, and just a few years before she died tragically young at age 31.

From the few times I’ve caught her daughter, Maya, singing on SNL, she seems to have great pipes, too.

  3. Maya Rudolph plays Kamala Harris. She is one of approximately two dozen snl Players (in the last two decades or so) who have done quite well since being cast members.

  4. Another fun fact: Maya Rudolph is the daughter of the singer Minnie Riperton, who our host featured in a Hili Dialogue not too long ago.

  5. Another fun fact: Maya Rudolph did her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I did not have her as a student. And yet another fun fact: I went to the same high schoool as Kamala Harris: Westmount High in Montreal Quebec. I had graduated before she arrived so no overlap.
