Hot off the press (click to see the CNN story):
Early details:
Interior Secretary David Bernhardt on Monday announced plans for an oil and gas leasing program in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, clearing the way for drilling in the remote Alaskan area.
Bernhardt said a future lease of the federally-owned land will make the entire 1.5 million acre Coastal Plain area available.
Bernhardt said the announcement “marks a new chapter in American energy independence” and predicted it could “create thousands of new jobs.”
But nothing can go wrong here, can it?
Every time you think they can’t get worse, they do. There seems to be some kind of law to this effect… the Law of Republican Governance.
HOW RIGHT YOU ARE! I D 10 T’s for sure!
This makes me think of Roy Zimmermann’s campaign slogan for the GOP:
“Government is the problem – vote for us and we’ll prove it!”
It’s at the end of one of his songs, but I can’t remember which one.
It’s like the number line – there’s no lower bound.
Nothing could go wrong? As in Siberia, Товарищ Bernhardt?

We can only hope that Biden will win the presidency and flip the Senate. Then Biden can appoint an honest person To be attorney general in the justice department and they can start investigating the investigators who are investigating the investigators.
And I hope that Biden sets up A commission that systematically in chronological order reinstates everything that Trump eliminated because “Obama did it “
and That commission should be headed by Barack Obama.—-
I think I have filled gas in my car once in six months.
All over NM there are lines of rail oil tanks just sitting on the tracks. And they want to drill more? Put money in nuclear. The time of oil is ending.
The gonif’s gotta go.
How could Trump resist? It is a chance to reward his energy industry pals and own the libs at the same time. The wonder is that he’s taken this long to do it. Perhaps he was saving it for the run-up to the election.
A President Biden will quickly undo this in January, and no company is going to invest money in ANWR now knowing that.
Per CNN Politics, I read that “Congress has mandated these lease sales so they have to go forward in some regard…” Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said. “A 2017 law required the department to hold two lease sales in the refuge by 2014.”
“A 2017 law required the department to hold two lease sales in the refuge by 2014.”
How would that work? A time machine?
Trump is rolling coal because he can
If America wants to create “thousands of new jobs”, it’s called the Green New Deal (or something equivalent). The Republican death-cult races towards the demise of life on earth. They all need to be pushed aside and left behind- the future health of the planet depends on it. I know the young people “get it”, I just hope they all decide to vote for once.
+1, as they say.
Ummm… “hold my beer”?
IIRC this has been a desire of gas corporations for years if not decades. In that respect, giving it to them is somewhat standard GOP fare.
I actually find Trump pushing the Department of Energy to rollback regulations on household water use merely so he can have a stronger shower, to be much more corrupt. Sure, it may not be as impactful, but I don’t think there’s been a President before this who has hurt nationwide environmental regulation for such a small, personal gain.
I doubt he wants to change the water regs just so he can have a stronger shower. Surely, as President, he can violate water laws in his own shower. If not in the White House, definitely at Mar-a-Lago. Instead, it’s red meat thrown to his followers.
If he’s getting DOE to reduce water use regualation on the pretense of wanting stronger showers in order to gain votes, that’s still IMO more corrupt than drilling in ANWR to reward energy corporation donors. Again, not necessarily more impactful, but more corrupt behavior.
When someone breaks your car window to steal $500 laying on the seat, the antisocial behavior is at least understandable. When someone does it to steal a penny on your seat, that’s so antisocial as to be hardly fathomable. ANWR is the $500; a shower or a vote is a penny.
I don’t think the two things are really comparable. Why is it a matter of which is more corrupt? Aren’t they both corrupt? Actually, are they corrupt or just bad ideas? With Trump it is always a little of both.
Is this just a ploy to enrage everyone and make us take our eyes off something else?
“Dear god, can this administration get much worse?” – I hope not, but if it gets another four years then I expect so…!
I worry about what tRump will do in the time between loosing the election and leaving office. I’m afraid that his past action will appear sane by comparison. Of course, this assumes that he peacefully leaves. If not, maybe he can be tried for treason, which would set a good example for would-be dictators.
Perhaps he is doing it to keep AK in the red column. It is showing signs of straying. But three measly electors?
CNN Politics: “Republican Alaskan lawmakers, Sens. Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Don Young, praised the decision.”
No surprise there. Maybe he is paying back Murkowski for her negative impeachment conviction vote.
You know, sitting in the theater all those years ago watching Agent Smith tell Neo what he though of humans,
“Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area.”
Hmm, where do we go after all the planet’s resources are consumed?
In a word: Yes!
Much worse? Can it get even a little worse?
