Washington (CNN)Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been treated for pancreatic cancer in New York City, the Supreme Court announced Friday
“The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body,” the court said.
This is the 86-year-old liberal icon’s fourth bout with cancer. In 1999, she successfully underwent surgery to treat colon cancer. She was treated for early stages of pancreatic cancer in 2009. Last December, Ginsburg underwent surgery to remove two cancerous nodules from her left lung.
Ginsburg, who inspired the meme ‘Notorious RBG’ and was the subject of a documentary and feature film in recent years, missed oral arguments for the first time earlier this year while recovering, but participated in rulings via court transcripts and in writing.
Ginsburg’s health has long been an issue. The oldest Supreme Court justice, Ginsburg leads the liberal wing on the court which is currently outnumbered 5-4 by conservatives.
A three-week course of stereotactic ablative radiation therapy began on August 5, the court said. A tumor was first detected after a blood test in July and a biopsy was performed as well.
“The Justice tolerated treatment well,” the court said. “No further treatment is needed at this time.”

RBG may look fragile, but she’s one tough old bird. She’s determined not to let Donald Trump name her successor, and only a mug would bet against her. She’s the real deal.
As I’ve said before, any organ I’ve got two of, she’s welcome to one of were she to need it.

I sure hope RBG lives and prospers much longer. But should a vacancy occur on the High Court six months from now, we can count on a man of integrity and high moral principle like Mitch McConnell not to do something so cynical as to ram a new nominee onto SCOTUS during a presidential election year in hypocritical contravention of the iron-clad rule he himself established regarding Merrick Garland, right? RIGHT??!!
I think Mr McConnell already answered that. His rule does not apply here, because we have an incumbent in 2020…. How flimsy an excuse can be?

Another Trump appointment would take the Supreme Court, as a court of last resort, and as a balancing branch of government, out of action. A rubber stamp for the GOP.
In the worst case, Justice Ginsberg dying before January 2021 (or, even worse, Mr Trump being re-elected) we can only hope that some of these ‘republican’ Justices turn out to be more moderate than they appeared before their nomination. It has been shown to happen before, conservative Justices becoming more liberal over time….

Yes, there is always the hope. But from commentary I’ve heard, the recruitment of candidates by the GOP has been pretty scrupulous. No one makes it past the first gate unless they are guaranteed on key issues, regardless of objective qualifications. Wasn’t it Kananaugh who wrote what was essentially a Trump application form in some journal a while back. He was basically saying, “I’m your guy”. It looks like, from now on it’s going to be black and white. I’m not optimistic about any surprise areas of grey.
I express that with admiring respect. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is as tough as the Terminator:

Cancer is never good. But if caught early enough, it can be lived with. And if she can, she will.
I wonder if it is theoretically possible that the noble current POTUS and Senate majority leader have extended their best (grudging) wishes for a speedy recovery.
RBG is truly inspirational. Four bouts of cancer and still standing. What a legend! I wish her well.
