It’s the first Thursday of Summer: June 27, 2019. It’s National Orange Blossom Day, which could refer to the flower but more likely to the drink with gin, vermouth, and orange juice. In the U.S., it’s Helen Keller Day, National HIV Testing Day and National PTSD Awareness Day
Today Grania’s memorial service will take place in Ireland. I am not sure yet whether it will be filmed, but I hope so. I wrote a contribution that will be read by Michael Nugent, and I may share it with you.

- 1759 – General James Wolfe begins the siege of Quebec.
- 1844 – Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, and his brother Hyrum Smith, are killed by a mob at the Carthage, Illinois jail.
- 1898 – The first solo circumnavigation of the globe is completed by Joshua Slocum from Briar Island, Nova Scotia.
It took Slocum three years to sail around the world alone, but he made it. Sadly, he disappeared in 1909 while heading to Brazil from the West Indies.
- 1950 – The United States decides to send troops to fight in the Korean War.
- 1954 – The Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant, the Soviet Union’s first nuclear power station, opens in Obninsk, near Moscow.
- 1954 – The FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match between Hungary and Brazil, highly anticipated to be exciting, instead turns violent, with three players ejected and further fighting continuing after the game

- 2007 – Tony Blair resigns as British Prime Minister, a position he had held since 1997.

Another amazing case of mimicry (be sure to read both tweets). The morphological changes in the spider are stunning.

Was a time, back in the Seventies mainly, when quite a few women stopped shaving. It was a feminist statement of sorts or at least a matter of convenience (and, for some, I’m sure it still is).
I had a girlfriend in those days who did so. She had the lightest, blonde peach fuzz on her legs and — go ahead call me a weirdo if you wanna — it was kinda hawt.
Can’t say that I find the pins behind the New Yorker tote all that fetching, though, to whomever they may belong. 🙂

Plenty of women don’t shave their legs, especially in certain cultures (not the US and Canada where it’s very common to shave, of course).

I see the Supreme court has finally decided on a couple of things. They punted on Gerrymandering and that just shows how unfit this court is. The conservatives are not concerned about depriving citizens of their most fundamental rights – to choose their political representatives.
Mixing religion and fraud is a good way to get people riled up.
On the other hand, the pay-back is good, if you can keep ahead of the pitchfork-and-firebrand brigade.
So, mobs aren’t all bad then. 🙂

Don’t you have shopping bags in America? For putting your “messages” in while out and about? This time of year, I’m about 50/50 on whether to have a rucksack (which contains the raincoat in the top pocket) or a shopping bag … and I can’t even remember what the faded logo on the bag used to be. It was a conference freebie with notepad, abstracts book, a couple of writing devices, but I forget which ocean basin it was about.
You wouldn’t catch me going around town in sandals though – too much dog shit on the pavements.
