It’s Monkey Trial Day: in 1925 the trial of John T. Scopes, a young high school science teacher accused of teaching evolution in violation of the Butler Act, began. In 1966 the Chicago Freedom Movement, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., held a rally at Soldier Field in Chicago. In 1553 the extremely unfortunate Lady Jane Grey became Queen for nine days. In 1991 Boris Yeltsin became the first elected President of Russia and in 1992 Panamanian drugs lord Manuel Noriega was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his sordid career in drug trafficking, bribery, corruption and racketeering.

It’s the birthday of Nikola Tesla (1856), Ron Glass (1945) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (1977) – both Serenity alumni – and Jessica Simpson (1980).

Philosophy and comestibles are the subject of conversation today in Poland.

Hili: I’m thinking and digesting.
Cyrus: I’m just digesting.

In Polish:

Hili: Myślę i trawię.
Cyrus: Ja tylko trawię

A few miles away Leon is patrolling the shop floor.

Leon: Insects are not working too hard today.

    1. I’ve been wondering about Leon’s new yard. The colors of the flowers and greenery are amazingly rich and intense.

      1. Yes, a remarkable photo. Casually scrolling down the page, I first thought it was a pre-Raphaelite painting.

  1. Those flight socks remind me of a time when my god-son was little, and his father was driving them across one of the Potomac bridges, and said, “Look, a fire boat!” Apparently, my god-son expected it to be a lot more fiery.

        1. I’ve had geoduck.

What’s with all this false duck advertising, anyway? Somebody should look into this — the FCC, the FDA, the ASPCA, somebody.

    1. My 4yo nephew was staying with me while his Mum went to our brother’s wedding in Japan. He was thrilled by the idea she was going on the bullet train. He thought it was fired from a really big gun.

    2. When I was a wee bairn in the 50’s, apparently PF Flyers ran a commercial on TV showing kids being able to jump over trees in their PF Flyers. I begged my parents to buy me a pair. When I got them, I immediately ran outside and started jumping. According to my parents, I was devastated with disappointment.

I don’t remember any of this. However, I expect it left deep scars on my psyche and explains my suspicion of corporations to this day.

  2. I would really like to be knocked off my board by a dolphin. An excellent story to have to tell.

Dracula cat does look very cool and bonus points for sounding just as you might expect a Dracula Cat to sound.

That crab on the door is obviously not a crab. It’s a facehugger. Don’t. Open. The. Door.

Doesn’t look like gorillas are all that scared of water to me.

  3. That tree crab on the door is terrifying. It looks like a facehugger from Alien, or something from The Mist (2007).

    1. Never read the book, but damn, the movie The Mist was one of the more depressing movies I’ve seen. I don’t like those kinds of endings.
