How quickly the weekend disappears!
Today is the birthday of Duke Ellington, Daniel Day-Lewis, Uma Thurman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jerry Seinfeld and Willie Nelson. In 1945 Dachau concentration camp was liberated, and in 1991 the Rodney King LA riots happened. It’s also the wedding anniversary of Hitler, one day before he and his wife Eva Braun committed suicide.
It’s also International Dance Day, which I did not know was a thing. It’s a UNESCO initiative and is celebrated with performances from Bollywood to Béjart Ballet.

If you are interested in hearing what non-shouty version of Jonathan Pie has to say
"If your opinion is that the colour of your skin makes you superior to me because of the colour of my skin, you should be able to say it. Because then I can argue against you."@jonathanpienews (out of character) says we must defend our right to freedom of speech. pic.twitter.com/hdNeaS9AWH

Finally, Hili takes on the world.
Hili: I’m ready.
A: What for?
Hili: For a fight or a flight.
In Polish:
Hili: Jestem gotowa.
Ja: Na co?
Hili: Na atak lub na ucieczkę.
I assume that starfish eat anemones, and that anemone in the video has just detected an approaching starfish?
Too bad the anemone’s swimming in a circle, I wonder if it ended up parking too close to the starfish again.

I think this is Stomphia didemon [Swimming anemone] versus the predatory sea star Dermasterias imbicata [Leather star]. But the Stomphia isn’t a Speedy Gonzales predator, it will spend minutes trying to subdue the anemone via stings – plenty of time for the anemone to press the eject button. I got all that fancy info above from this video where you can see the whole thing in action:
https://youtu.be/4xa_KzU4UWk
Very cool. The anemone sounding like a toilet stuck in flush mode.
I *think* that’s the sound of the camera[wo]man’s breathing gear 🙂
For a sense of scale the anemone is around 2″ tall & this is recorded at around 180 to 130 ft depth [the habitable depth range for the anemone] – below normal scuba depth. Too much sound for such an itty bitty beast.
PS – I’m gonna be a nerd & mention that I just found out the Leather Star predator moves across the landscape at only 150mm/min [2.5mm per second]
correction: that’s 180 to 360 ft depth
I did quite a few hundred hours underwater. I’ve seen anemones eating jellyfish, and I’ve seen jellyfish eating anemones. I’ve even seen cannibalistic anemones, eating their own kind. But I’ve never seen an anemone eating a starfish or a starfish eating an anemone.
Nor did I ever see a ‘swimming anemone’. Stunning!
Brilliant selection today Grania, but don’t wish Sunday away, Is it your policy to not engage on WEIT, in comments at all [or maybe rarely]? Testing, testing.
The two mating dance vids are bleedin; marvellous. I love dance that’s explicitly for the mating [ballet to Travolta] or the war, but can’t handle it when it’s put on as an expression of more complex ideas. The wrong medium [thinking Rick Wakeman on Ice & other atrocities!]
The Springer-doggie-in-a-pub/Squirrel thread is amusing:

Thanks!
Oops didn’t realise it would embed. Click thru for pleasing Twitter dog pics & commentary.
The dog pics are great. They portray tons of person— I mean doganality.
Ha ha that’s exactly right! Though I like “dogality” more – easier to say & it’s a four pawed [syllabled] word 🙂
I think the Rodney King riots happened in 1992 ???
yeah, that’s right – the beating-by-cops was ’91 & the riots were almost a year later.
“Today is the birthday of Duke Ellington, Daniel Day-Lewis, Uma Thurman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jerry Seinfeld and Willie Nelson.”
Quite the day! Is there someinternetplace where birthdays are compared?
For today, Mr Robert, thus in re “someinternetplace”:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_29
and same for any other of the
( [ papally … … ] gregorian calendar – ) days.
That of which I happen to know.
Has to it per any one day’s worth of entries
births, deaths, observances, events.
Perhaps other countries’ different calendars
also have their own such websites
including wikipedia sites within those areas.

And another ( USA ) website with similar entries
for any one of its day’s worth, Mr Robert, here:

Thanks.
Uma Thurman, like two personal acquaintances of mine, really did not realize how attractive she was until she became famous and even then seemed baffled by folks saying she was beautiful.
In the 1990s, I played a sociological experiment with her persona.
I was hanging out mainly with computer and math geeks at the time, and when Andrew Wiles proved Fermat’s Last Theorem, I casually mentioned at a work party that my father knew his father. This generated some interest until I later mentioned that my father knew Uma Thurman’s father. Instantly, all discussion of Wiles dropped and everyone wanted to know about my UT connection. The first time it was a phenomenon I stumbled upon by accident, but I tried it on purpose twice later at other geek gatherings. Same results!!
(Wiles’ father is a famous historian of the Church of England, and Thurman’s father is a famous Buddhist scholar. THey are Maurice Wiles and Robert Thurman.)
Tell me more second hand UT stuff, everything else factual about the universe & mathematics can be forgotten & reclaimed later, but not UT stories once gone 🙂
Sorry, I have exhausted my personal knowledge of Uma in this post. My knowledge of her not considering herself attractive comes from magazines and media, not from a personal connection. A grad student of my fathers babysat her when she was 8 or 9, but I have no inside track on her personal life.
Ah, Maurice Béjart, as a youngster I had the honour of meeting him twice in Brussels, in the late seventies or early eighties and once in Florence. He actually recognized me, a then nobody, a teen, something ‘nobodies’ tend to remember. A great choreographer, and an accomplished dancer himself.
Despite his reputation of being grumpy, he was a very, excessively even, charming host on all three occasions.
