Reader John O’Neall called my attention to a cool site: “The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards,” and I suddenly realized that that is a very important site to have on the Internet. Here are a few winners and commended photos from 2016. Go to the site to see all the finalists and the 2015 winners:

  1. Re the pelican pic.

A wonderful bird is the pelican
His bill can hold more than his belican
He can take in his beak
    Food enough for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the helican
    Dixon Lanier Merritt

From the decks of the trawlers on the still waters of the boat-harbour in Brunswick Heads, NSW, we used to watch the pelicans ambush cormorants for their fish as they popped to the surface, grabbing them by the neck and forcing them back under the water until the fish was released. One skipper told me he had seen a pelican actually drown a cormorant doing this.

  2. I love these photos. There is one on the linked page, but not not shown here, of a beautifully colored lizard holding onto a stick in such a way as took denote a rock guitarist that has inspired me to try and paint it. If successful I’ll share it here, but it’ll be no mean feat.

    1. No idea about the location, but what struck me about this extremely cute photo is – isn’t the cub effectively dead, and the mother in deep, deep trouble? Shouldn’t a cub of this age (and a mother at this time of year) be out on the ice sheets, learning to kill and eat seals?

      1. Polar bears den quite high up. 3000m is the figure I recall. They have quite a walk to get to the ice sheets.

        1. The only place I’ve heard of polar bears denning is Svalbard – but that might be because it’s the most reliable place for camera crews to go to get footage.
But why would they den so high? If you’ve got enough depth of snow to provide the insulation you need, why go any further?

  3. The owl pic reminds me of a caption competition in the RSPB members’ magazine back in the late 1960s, of a Spoonbill in similar pose. The picture was taken in Spain, where General Franco was at that time still in power. The winning caption: “And then, senor, the government banned all left-wing activities…”

  4. Excellent Job. One if the best wildlife pictures i have seen. Loved it. I can understand how much efforts are required to capture photographs when it comes to wildlife. I started photography when i was in college then i decided to inspire others also to have some passion for photography. I started writing tips for beginners at https://www.behance.net/nitinkhannaor Just go through and let me know if you liked it
