How not to tell your parents you are about to skydive

A young Irishman called Roger Ryan is travelling the world, and is currently in Australia. He has been keeping his parents up to date with his progress via Skype, and in this recording he’s chatting to them from what they think is a bus. It was in fact a plane and he was about to jump out. Cue horror, hilarity and NSFW obscenities:

  1. If you’d have told my younger self that in a few years it would be possible to video call your parents WHILST SKYDIVING, I’m not sure I would have believed you. Modern technology is amazing!

(BTW, I don’t think any of the words used really count as “obscenities” in Ireland…)

  2. At least there was no need to cue the paramedics. (On behalf of the parents; but for that matter, on behalf of any of the parties. 😀 )

  3. Hilarious video.

I went skydiving once in my college days. I made sure not to tell my mom until after I went. At the time, cell phones didn’t do much more than make calls, anyway.

I wonder how many places out there still let you skydive like the place I went to. With just one morning’s worth of training, they let you jump in a single chute, not one of those tandem chutes with an instructor. They did, however, have two instructors jumping right next to you to make sure you did everything right and pulled your chute.

  4. Seems a perfect way to do it to me. There is probably a BASE equivalent (the other end of the adrenaline spectrum of sky diving) somewhere on line. Though it would require a network connection, which might be a challenge for some ‘E’ jumps. I dont think Iridium gives enough bandwidth for video phoning.
