Right wingnuts of the week

September 18, 2015 • 1:15 pm

Reader Naomi Fein clued me in to The National Memo, a online site that, as she describes, is “a news mag founded and edited by Joe Conason, a good journalist who used to edit the New York Observer. His politics are excellent.” (By that she means leftish). One of the good things at that site is Sam Reisman’s sporadic column “This week in crazy,” which collects a number of  lunatic antics by right-wingers. There are five bit of nuttery of them in this week’s column, but I ‘ll give just two:

The is from Roy Moore, the über-conservative chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court who tried to keep his Ten Commandments memorial on the courthouse grounds, and also announced he’d refuse Alabama clerks the right to honor the U.S. Supreme Court decisions to issue gay marriage licenses. Reisman quotes Right Wing Watch‘s report about Moore’s attempt to ape a famous theologian. The judge was speaking at the right-wing Eagle Forum, attacking the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage:

After reading Martin Niemöller’s poem “First They Came For The Socialists…,” Moore decided to write his own version in honor of Davis: “Ladies in gentlemen, we can say the same thing today. They came for the bakers, I didn’t bake cakes. They came for the florists, but I didn’t deal with flowers. They came for the little clerk down in Kentucky by the name of Kim Davis, but I’m not a clerk, I have nothing do with issuing licenses. Then they came for me, and nobody was left.”

Oy vey! And speaking of Yiddish, here’s Ann Coulter, reacting to what she saw as the Republican candidates’ pandering to Israel during Wednesday’s debate:

Coulter backpedaled, saying that she was actually being pro-Semitic, but Reisman describes another conservative recounting tales of Coulter’s “virulent anti-Semitism.”

This is all par for the course. Nothing to see here folks; move along.

    1. The truly mind-numbing idiocy is evident in the full Twitter rant, where Coulter bloviates that “Based on Census, another 300 immigrants entered the country during debate (33 per second) to vote against the GOP candidates’ tax &war plans.”

This is grade school math: 3600 seconds per hour, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. That means she honestly believes that over one billion immigrants come to America yearly.

Smarter than a 3rd-grader? Not even close.

      1. More circumstantial evidence that Coulter may have been drunk tweeting.

In which case her letting slip the dogs of her anti-Semitism is an instance of in vino veritas.

  1. I always enjoyed reading Joe Conason, and I read him a lot at places like Salon, Slate, and the Observer. I am very pleased to see this. I had no idea of The National Memo, but I will bookmark it immediately.

  2. Oh Ann – let’s set aside the anti-Semitism — you do know that we treat people fairly and form opinions for how to do things because they are the right opinions and right way to treat people, don’t you?

  3. I don’t think Judge Moore has any authority over county clerks, outside of a ruling in a case brought before him. I am not quite sure how he plans to do anything.

  4. I was recently heartened to learn that the U Alabama Biology has a lecture series named ALLELE. That’s ALabama LEctures on Life’s Evolution.

Clever acronym, even if not technically(?) an acronym, and good for them. It would be interesting to hear if they get any blowback on that from the surrounding populace.

  5. “…Then they came for the butchers, but I was a vegetarian. Then they came for the candle stick makers, but I always went to bed early and woke up late.

Then – then they came for the moronic Alabama justices, and that freaked me the hell out.

  6. Nothing Ann Coulter says should be taken seriously. She is a female Trump. Addicted to public attention. The only problem is that so many people take both her and Trump seriously when they should just be ignored or laughed at

  7. I have a friend who talked to someone on Ann Coulter’s staff many years ago.
Even she does not believe the stuff she says. She is in the business of manufacturing outrageous statements to stay in the public eye. She wants to evoke strong reactions.

  8. It astounds me that the kind of People that make up the GOP Clown Car can get Elected or are taken seriosly as Candidates, it speaks volumes about their Constituents.

  9. Just as a matter of interest, was this “Coulter” person in the public eye in 1993-1995 when Philip Pullman was making a “Mrs Coulter” one of the major villains in the “Dark Materials” trilogy?
