It’s Friday, the nominal beginning of Labor Day weekend, which for most Americans is a holiday (formally on Monday). However, Professor Ceiling Cat takes the name seriously, and so will be laboring much of the time. But of course the Furry Navel of the World doesn’t deign to labor—her staff does it for her. She spends her time mousing a bit and resting; and today she’s contemplating Great Things:

I didn’t even know Labor Day existed. Is it comparable to International Workers’ Day on the 5th of May?

It is truly an American holiday that should have been cancelled by now since it is hypocritical to celebrate something that really does not exist any longer but…maybe they just want another three day weekend.

Not only an American holiday! Canada recognizes the same Labour Day holiday as the US. NZ and Australia also have a Labour Day but it falls on a different date.
Also, I’m glad labour unions did what they did to get us 8 hour workdays and weekends!
To celebrate the history of the labor movement might be worth something but it’s doubtful that many in this country at least, even care. The history of anything is really not important to most living here today. A good example of that might be another holiday we have called Columbus Day.
Ours is at the end of October – it’s the first three day weekend after winter, and always a treat. The reason it’s celebrated is known to most people here. (NZ)

Wasn’t it a Gilbert and Sullivan character who had a little list (etc) of undesirable trouble-making members of society who, by their actions had attracted the unwelcome attention of the State?
In my book, doing things that make the State likely to want you disappeared is probably a Good Thing. For your personal development, not health or likelihood of a long life. Or a happy one. With a history in animal rights, anti-hunting, anti-vivisection, trade union activism and left-wing politics (yeuchh! must wash keyboard now!), I have never had a high opinion of the State, or of it’s latter-day substitute, Business. I figure my current government doesn’t like me for hounding our PM for silencing science and scientists. They probably especially hated that Kremlin retweet I did of Putin handing out awards to scientists where I chastized my government for doing the opposite.

Since the Hili Dialogues are frequently used to provide updates on both weather and cats, let me take this opportunity to note that last night, for the first time in I-don’t-remember-how-long, I left the doors open all night; and, for the first time in about as long, Baihu and I just got back from a morning walk in South Mountain Park.
Looks like the temperatures are going to rebound today for at least a few more days…but I do believe the worst is finally over. It’s finally summertime!
