Tuesday: Hili dialogue

May 19, 2015 • 5:21 am

It’s Tuesday and that means Book Day! Yay? But I will avoid all temptation to see how it’s doing, which is truly the Road to Perdition. Although temperatures in Chicago were in the 80’s yesterday, today they’re dropping 30 degrees, with highs only in the mid-50s. The weather is nuts. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili requests nearly the whole nine yards for breakfast.

A: English breakfast or continental?
Hili: English, please: bacon but hold the eggs.

In Polish:
Ja: Śniadanie angielskie, czy kontynentalne?
Hili: Angielskie, bekon, ale bez jajek.

  1. Wishing PCC a Happy Book Launch Day! Get the champagne out…

I am guessing, the back not having been mentioned, that it is much improved.

      1. Don’t know which app you’re using but you may have to sitting there in the cloud & it needs to be brought done locally.

    1. How does it look on the kindle? That is my reading medium of choice, but I was slightly worried that there might be images or figures that would not show up too well with e-ink. Is that a problem at all?

      1. Quickly flipping through it, it looks nice to me. I like all the various hyperlinks that let you move around too.

  2. Pretty kitty, pretty lilac! As a kid we had beautiful white and deep purple double-flowered lilacs in our allotment garden. I fondly remember vases overflowing with lilac and the lovely smell.

Hili doesn’t like eggs? I guess she prefers them hatched.

    1. We had white and pink and lilac lilacs too. The scent is heavenly. The lilac lilacs seem to grow well in the wild, just about everywhere! I’ll have to try and dig up my old photos of swallowtails on our lilacs…

      1. I think the lilac lilac is the wild form, all other colours and the double-flowered ones are cultivars. The colour has the name for a reason, lol.

What I hated about our lilacs were the stolons/runners it made, if not kept in check the lilacs would have taken over the whole garden. Yeah, it was my job to remove those darned things.

        1. I know what you mean, though I didn’t mind if the fancy lilacs spread.

Right now I’m battling weeds, wisteria and Virginia Creeper vines spreading everywhere, but I’ve never seen any flowering shrub that takes over quite like false spirea.

  3. I love that the Albatross is dedicated in part to Hili and her staff. Unfortunately I have to go to work. Today is a perfect day to curl up with a good book and a kitty or two. Cool and rainy in Colorado.

  4. Happy book day! If Hili seems unmoved, it’s just because she knows the book is going to do well.

  5. Happy book day indeed! I am jealous of those who already received it. My order is supposed to ship today but I have not yet heard from Barnes & Noble that it indeed is on its way.

(I think this is only the third book I pre-ordered – the other two being Donna Tartt’s latest and Thomas Pynchon’s latest)

  6. Congratulations on the book launch! My copy was delivered to my Kindle this morning! Can’t wait to begin reading…

Hili is lovely as always & the lilac is gorgeous!

  7. Mine should be sitting on the porch when I get home this afternoon! and then we’ll have another few weeks until the next WEIT-anticipated book comes out. July 7 in the US, if I’m not mistaken, for Dr. Cobb’s Life’s Greatest Secret.

and does Hili truly not eat eggs? If going for the full English, I’d assume a turning up of the delicate nose at the grilled tomato. ah well. Never question royalty.

      1. Hili really doesn’t like eggs. Her predecessor, Pia, didn’t know a better thing than a raw egg yolk – not even a fresh mouse could compare – so I wanted to give Hili the same treat. I was left with an egg yolk – untouched. It went smoothly into a dog.

        1. Hahaha… smoothly and silkily into Cyrus….
That’s one thing I love about d*ggies – I always had a clear conscience with our two big girls, as nothing ever went to waste!

        2. making the mistake of giving my two d*gs the “egg skin”, that thin, crispy bit around the edge of a fried egg if I don’t cook it correctly, has resulted in two pairs of eager, staring eyes following my every forkful of breakfast. It’s irritating to eat before an audience. Especially a whining, drooling one. An accidental exercise in Pavlovian conditioning that resists all attempts at extinction. But, then again, it’s about the closest thing to meat the poor pups get in this vegetarian household!

          1. I could just stick with scrambled eggs, topped with, what else? Smoked paprika. Seriously, my favorite spice. great on pizza too.

  8. The weather is cold in northern New Mexico as well…lots of moisture that no one could possibly complain about except maybe when it does not rain again for month and then half the southwest goes up in flames…but I have a feeling this summer may see fewer wild fires.

  9. Hili shares my tastes…I love all sorts of dishes cooked with eggs, but not eggs themselves.

And yay book day! I guess that answers the eternal question: “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”

  10. Just purchased my copy at Barnes & Noble, but shockingly, the book wasn’t on display! The clerk had to retrieve it from the back room. Apparently, their copies hadn’t been taken out of the box yet.

I’m looking forward to reading it, but I promised myself I’d first embark on Neal Stephenson’s latest adventure.
