Thursday: Hili dialogue

September 18, 2014 • 2:45 am
The long sobs of the violins of autumn fill Hili with a monotonous languor:
Hili: I’m looking with sadness at these brown leaves. Do they mean that this year there will be winter again?
A: Judging from the history of the world up to the present, there probably will.

In Polish:
Hili: Patrzę ze smutkiem na te brązowe liście. Czy to znaczy, że w tym roku też będzie zima?
Ja: Sądząc z dotychczasowej historii świata, chyba tak.

  1. Oh, Hili! But winter means more fusses.

    Here is a philosophical question:

If cats could shed years, would there be yearballs?

  2. Well, over the next billion years or so, the Sun will swell and heat up to the point that the oceans boil away. There may still technically be “winters” in the sense that the Sun will change position in the sky and temperatures will vary…but from insanely fucking hot to you’ve got to be shitting me hot.

Not that there’ll be anything alive on the planet then to notice….

I the mean time, Hili, if you like, our winters here in Arizona are likely not all that different from your autumns and springtimes. Indeed, this is about the first week-long period where the high temperatures are (just barely) staying in the double digits…that’d be mid-30s for units you’re more familiar with….
