Is there a gene change in some domestic cats that enables them to digest milk as adults, as with humans?
I’ve never heard of a lactose-intolerant cat, and I think I’ve seen even lions lapping milk, so I’m guessing cats never evolved the lose-lactose-tolerance characteristic in the first place.
Now that I’m thinking about it, since human children (and perhaps all great ape children?) stay with their mother so long that they usually are around for for the birth of the next “litter”, maybe lactose-intolerance was an adaptation to discourage the older kids from stealing the milk supply from the babies? Cats wouldn’t have that problem.
Many adult cats are lactose-intolerant. You can Google it.
I don’t think dairy products are especially healthy for cats, but most cats will happily indulge in them. So long as you limit it to special treats (and assuming no allergies), it’s not a problem, but I wouldn’t make it a significant portion of the cat’s diet — or even a daily thing, for that matter.
