There is a new d*g, Cyrus, in Hili’s house. Cyrus, a black canid, is about seven, and spent four years in the pound before he was rescued by Malgorzata and Andrzej. Hili, however, doesn’t want to share her digs.
Hili: Will this huge dog go away soon?A: No, he is a new member of the family.Hili: So why am I afraid of him and not vice versa?

Hili: Czy ten wielki pies zaraz sobie pójdzie?
Ja: Nie, to jest nowy członek rodziny.
Hili: To dlaczego ja się go boję, a nie on mnie?

Intererstingly the word d*g (as coined by Coyne!) is of oncertain origin, as the OED Online says
“The word belongs to a set of words of uncertain or phonologically problematic etymology with a stem-final geminated g in Old English which is not due to West Germanic consonant gemination and therefore does not undergo assibilation. These words form both a morphological and a semantic group, as they are usually Old English weak masculine nouns and denote animals; compare frog n., hog n., pig n., stag n.,…”
Interestingly also, but coincidental rather than cognate, there is an Australian Aboriginal language in which the word for ‘dingo’ is dog. [‘Dingo’ is Dharug for d*g, but at the moment I can’t find the name of the other language, of which there are dozens and many of them nearly extinct.]
Yeah good ol’ Anglo Saxon gave us some good words. If it weren’t for those pesky Normans maybe we would be speaking much differently.
Animals with dark fur do have it hard. I’m glad Malgorzata and Andrzej adopted him/her.
One weekend a while back our daughter brought her pet coonhound along for a visit. The d*g apparently thought our part-Maine coon cat was a coon. It did not go well for the cat. He decided to spend the weekend at our neighbor’s house.
I hope we will see photos of Cyrus.

Cyrus is a lucky duck to be adopted into such a loving and huge-hearted family!
Poor Hili — what a shock it must be for her. But Cyrus might turn out to be a good bodyguard for her. Fitness might never bother her again.
