I guess I’m in a bit of a contretemps with Dr. Chopra. He keeps tw**ting at me and they’re funny as hell. I guess he can’t help himself, which makes the following especially LOLzy:
I love these. The first one implies that because I’m a determinist and an incompatibilist, he can predict my reactivity. (As if Chopra’s doesn’t have even greater and more predictable reactivity!) But determinists can also be determined to be nonreactive. The third is an ad hom, and attempts to impugn my arguments because of my determinism.
The second is a deepity, which starts off okay and then degenerates into complete obscurantism. When Chopra stubs his toe on a rock, is he stubbing it on “consciousness within consciousness”? Can he will it not to hurt? And can that will then be read into his genes?
Then he proclaims his freedom from being reactive:

The statements “the great man brushes off a flea”, and “do not be personally offended by your critics”, would seem to be at odds with each other.
You don’t get to call yourself a “great man” while simultaneously comparing your critics to “fleas”… and then in the next breath act like you’re the bigger man here.

How sad it must be, to not understand that there’s a massive chasm between “robot”, and the kind of idiotic woo that man peddles. Apparently no atheist loves music, or art, or other people for that matter. Apparently the concept that our “choices” are already determined by who and what we are, means our livfes are meaningless — even though we are still living out those choices every day.
I don’t understand the person who finds these ideas unconscionable, and akin to being a “robot”. Human beings are massively complex organisms.
Here’s the thing, Deepak – either submit your theories on consciousness, epigenetics, and the rest to rigorous testing and peer-review — and accept the results — or go away.
Stop declaring things by fiat, and show your work. You think these things are genuine scientific breakthroughs? Then prove it.
You skip the actual hard, arduous parts of being a scientist (including having to admit you’re dead wrong from time to time), and go right to the part where you’re appearing on Larry King Live, or selling miracle salves and balms on the internet for low low prices.
Instead of appealing to your supposed scientific peers to critique your work (which you evidently hate), you instead opt to appeal to the masses by burying them in your quantum babble that sounds good, but often doesn’t mean anything.

I’ve ran into a few Deepaks, and Chopra seems to be a very common name, so it seems pretty likely there are a few other ones as well …
I’m beginning to suspect that Deepak is going off the “deepend” (emotionally, that is: he went off the deep end intellectually a long time ago)- it’s hilarious to see someone who claims to supposedly have access to the wisdom of the ages indulging in temper tantrums and name-calling when he’s criticized or called to account in any way. His emotional response indicates that he probably really DOES believe the spew he puts out, which makes it sadder than if he was just a charlatan.
How is the third one an “ad hom?” He may be misrepresenting your belief, but he is clearly attacking what he perceives to be your belief, not you as a person. Would the line, “Deepak believes god is real” be an ad hom? I don’t think so. Anyway, deepak is an immature snake oil salesman, who can dish it out, but can’t take it – that’s an ad hom. And it’s true.
You’re confusing ad hominem attack with insult. If Jerry said “Deepak believes god is real, therefore his science is invalid”, that would be an ad hom. The example you gave: “deepak is an immature snake oil salesman, who can dish it out, but can’t take it” isn’t an ad hom, it’s an insult.
In the context of arguing about the validity of the paper he published, Deepak stated something about Jerry that is completely irrelevant to the argument as though it had some relevance. That’s what makes it an ad hom.

Hey I would also like to try and say something about mr.Chopra. I find it hard to make myself clear, I feel somewhat embarraced but I am afraid he had caused some problems also at mines. Maybe there is an entrance at yours because for some time I tought i was the onlyone who had experienced such a things. Heavy punishments for things he does not like.
I feel like having less freedom,less selfesteem because I avoided things out of being judged as a wrong person. I hope that for just once I may give some examples, hearing them is enough for me to feel more safe in my future. I am very sorry for this but understand that messages like this had a cause.
I hope that mr.chopra will learn about the prefrontal cortex a bit. His actions somethimes maybe also have concequences. Somewhere I feel that it’s not always me or someone else to be blamed heavily my true appologies for this.
