Via Unreasonable Faith we find that there is a robotic program, “The Wisdom of Chopra,” that can generate Deepak Deepities. Before going there, try the Unreasonable Faith quiz: which of these four statements was actually said by Chopra, and which were generated by the program:
“Perception is inherent in cosmic possibilities”;
“Interdependence inspires quantum life”;
“Hidden meaning is serving your own evolution”;
“Freedom heals self-righteous knowledge”.
I have no idea, but I suspect the first one is Deepak’s. At any rate, here’s how the program works:
It has been said by some that the thoughts and tweets of Deepak Chopra are indistinguishable from a set of profound sounding words put together in a random order, particularly the tweets tagged with “#cosmisconciousness”. This site aims to test that claim! Each “quote” is generated from a list of words that can be found in Deepak Chopra’s Twitter stream randomly stuck together in a sentence.

No really, I can’t count that low.
All four deepities were generated by a program. One instance runs on a computer; the other runs on a biological unit known to us all a Deepak Chopra.
I found out about the generator a few days ago and I used it and it regurgitated “Infinity embraces cosmic energy.” I Googled this and to my amazement I found virtually the same thing in an article by him called the Major Problem of Science from March 2012. This indicates how he manipulates terminology with out any sense of meaning or he uses a random generator himself.
I got “Infinity depends on cosmic joy”, with the top hit from agniyoga.org (again not a perfect match).
I guessed right…

So does this all mean the generator can pass its Turing test? Or that Deepak fails it?
It means Deepak, deepities and other forms of gibberish should not be part of the test.
A Turing test aims for a type specimen, or you would have false positives (missing incompetent AIs) and false negatives (say, reject by not knowing trade language of scientists).
Gibberish qualifies as non-typical human (or AI) misbehavior.

When I first read this I thought it said “Twitter steam”, as in “steaming pile of …”. That seems appropriate, actually.
I’m dismayed that some religious types that are obviously a bit smarter than Deepak Chopra still hook up with him, which apparently they do due to a combo of DC’s apparent earnestness and values they share with him.
Four years ago I read an essay on the 2008 Presidential election by one of the world’s smartest progressive Christians (John Shelby Spong) which contained a paragraph citing some observations by Chopra. While I agreed with the statements made, any number of wiser heads could have said the same thing.
In 2000 DC and the Dalai Lama were both guests on Larry King Live. Chopra was there to plug DL 14, but his comments and answers were all notably more obscurantist and sophistical than DL 14’s statements about himself. I recall when Larry King asked Dalai Lama to what he attributed his long and healthy life, he replied “I eat well, I sleep well”. I can imagine that had he asked Chopra that question, he would have gone on about quautum shmantum
I’m afraid this is evidence that the liberal religious commitment to science is selective.
Yeah, it’s almost as if there’s a self-serving, mutually-perpetuating moneymaking racket that binds them all together. JC of biblical fame once said you cannot worship both God and Mammon; pretty clear to me the choice these hucksters have made.

the sad thing is that people will pay attention to this crap just like they do horoscopes. I have some friends who are excited about this and all I can do is shake my head in exasperation.
This reminds me of an incident which helped me on my journey from Spirituality to atheism. Enthralled by the beautiful Transcendentalist poetry and prose of Ralph Waldo Emerson, I decided to memorize (and thus internalize) some of my favorite stanzas and passages. An English major, I had already developed a systematic technique involving constant chains of repetition with diminishing reliance on checking the text.
To my frustration, however, I found myself constantly mixing up clauses, verbs, subjects, and modifiers. The pithy phrases and insights were all too often coming out backwards — even when I had originally memorized them the right way.
It eventually occured to me that there didn’t seem to be a “right way.” Everything I jumbled out sounded as reasonable, inspirational, and transcendent as what was written It didn’t really matter. Neither I — nor, I suspected, anyone — was going to catch an obvious error, something that made no sense.
Wasn’t that splendid!
Not really. I tried to tell myself that Transcendental spirituality was so very, very deep and wise that this lack of genuine content was a feature, not a bug — but it was a crack of doubt in the blissful search for the Oversoul and Higher Truth that all sensitive and caring people are supposed to crave. I could understand and appreciate the need for vagueness when reaching beyond the world of senses — but incoherence??? That just seemed inexcusably sloppy.
Poetry is a way to consider the multiples, however doesn’t offer a way to think through the complexities. Transcendental offers us momentary considerations, however not a way to live our lives and think clearly. I go to the movies and enjoy the break from reality, however it isn’t offering a way of thinking through. Congrats on thinking your way out of the transcendental,

The one contemporary of Emerson who was highly critical of him was Nathaniel Hawthorne. There’s a rather bumbling character in one of his novels (The Blithedale Romance) based on him.
