Big solar flare on Monday

April 17, 2012 • 3:56 pm

This solar flare took place at 12:45 p.m. Chicago time yesterday.  It’s a release of energy from the sun, and this one, though quite impressive, rates only as of “moderate size.” For more information about what causes these, check out the Wikipedia page.

  1. Gorgeous footage! Don’t mean to be gross but it seems that CMEs and flares are “solar zits” of the cosmos that never quite go away.

  2. I once downloaded NASA’s 3D Sun app by mistake (free) and enjoy the amazing hyper spectral imagery of magneto hydrodynamic explosions. It’s even worthwhile turning on push notifications for events like this.

      1. Rather than thinking of myself as harvesting I would more accurately think of myself as open pit mining. I see myself as the next great benevolent energy baron.

  3. hey, in some cases when I first check out this web site I get automatically redirected to another page which feels very unexpected. You might want to have a look at why this is going on! Cheers
