Morecambe and Wise were my first thought when I first saw J&M a few years ago.
The J&M writer is a clearly a M&W fan.

It has always puzzled me that islam is so harsh on apostates, given that all moslems are the descendents of apostates.

I can see how they’re all descendents of unbelievers, but not apostates. An apostate is someone who has been a part of a group and renounces it.
To become a muslim you have to renounce your existing religion. That makes you an apostate. Unless you’re an atheist, but I’m betting there weren’t many of those in 7th century Arabia.
