Kitteh contest: Hamlet

May 3, 2011 • 9:52 am

There are millions of tails in this naked world, and this is one of them.  Reader Cale entered Hamlet, an all black rescue cat with huge fangs and mismatched eyes.  His story:

This handsome devil is Hamlet.  We rescued him from the Omaha Animal shelter as a three year old in May 2000.  He’s been an indispensable member of our family since the first day we brought him home.  He has a serene almost Zen personality most of the time. He will coo and trill rather insistently to be picked up. He will also simply headbutt and force his way into sleeping in or on the spot you’ve already chosen on the bed for yourself; without fail he will sleep every night pasted to my wife with his head on her pillow. Some number of years ago his left eye changed color so he now has orange and yellow eyes to go with his vampire fangs. Unlike most cats, he cannot seem to purr but instead does this sort of snore/rattle thing and will knead the air or your arm when he’s happy.

  1. Awww…gorgeous cat — and he sounds like such a sweetheart!

Thanks for giving Hamlet a chance to be. The world would be such a poorer place were he not to be.

    Cheers,

  2. What a piece of work is cat! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculties! in form and moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension, how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals!

    Hurray for Hamlet and Cale!

  3. I love the black cats! Also, do you have any clue why his eye turned orange? That’s strange, but cool as long as it doesn’t seem to impair him in any way. I may have to send in pics of my cat. I enjoy these intimate portraits of cats much more then those of humans.

    1. Yep, when the eye started changing colors we took him to the vet for a consult. He gave us a long Latin name for what was happening and assured us that Hamlet’s eye was (is) healthy and functioning normally. It freaked us out, I can tell you.

      1. I suppose you don’t recall what it was? Interested in a nerdy sort of way as as soon as I read this I thought it sounds like some sort of a genetic syndrome?

  4. What a handsome cat! And we all know what he’s going to be for Halloween, every year. Must save on costumes (note: as a rule, cats don’t take kindly to costumes.)

    1. One thing I forgot to mention in his bio is that when he gets really relaxed with his head on my wife’s pillow, he drools!

  5. I’d just like to take a moment to mention how glad I am that Hamlet isn’t being tortured, that he hasn’t been assassinated, that he isn’t being held indefinitely overseas without charges, and that he doesn’t have any problems with the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection and Random Mutation.

That he has a suitable pillow to cushion his head at night is icing on the pake, really.

    Cheers,

    1. “Tis not above my inky cloak, good mother, Nor customary suits of solemn black,
Nor windy suspiration of forced brevity.”

  6. Hamlet is fabulous! I’ve never heard of a cat’s eye changing color; has anyone else? Do you have pictures of him when his eyes were the same color?

  7. Hamlet’s a beauty, and I’ve got to tell you, the moment I saw his pic I thought he had to have Siamese somewhere in his family background. Hearing how vocal he is about being picked up, I’m certain of it.

We were selected by 2 black adolescent kittehs, who were roaming and seeking a home. Our poor old cat Cally – a rescuee we had for nearly 16 years (and she was between 4 and 6 when we picked her up at the cat shelter!), had just had a stroke and I had to take her to the vets (that was a tough time) and these boys needed a home… Anyway, we asked all around the neighbourhood and discovered where they came from. The lady was happy to give them to us. Her Siamese queen had been a bad girl one night and 8 black kittens were the result, these 2 were the last to find a home.

Milo and Slinky look rather like Hamlet; espeically in the shape of their faces, and Slinky particularly is very vocal (a famous Siamese trait). In fact, he hardly ever is quiet. He even vocalizes when he lands after jumping. It sounds like a kitteh version of ‘Oof!’ But maybe that’s because he’s rather more chunky and solid now, than lean and slinky, as he was when he first turned up.

Keep on enjoying your kitteh-boy. They’re one of life’s delights.

    1. Ginny, based on his behavior, vocalization and features, we also surmised that he’s got some amount of Siamese in him, especially with those big ears 🙂
