Okay, we don’t want to divide our attention among too many animals (or do we?), but reader “rcs” has called our attention to an awesome HummingbirdCam. It’s in southern California, and is trained on the nest of an Allen’s hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) who produced two chicks today.
You’ll have to watch a short commercial, but it’s well worth it. Go to the site facts to see how remarkably small the nest is, and where they’ve placed the camera. I’ve just watched the mother feeding her brood.
The babies are sort of bloblike at this early stage.

The nest is in a rosebush, low to the ground. Danger of predators!
Maybe it’s not too onerous to watch both eagles and hummingbirds. . .

They’ve become more common around here in the last few years, and I get to see them quite a lot now. Looove them.

Very cool! One of these days I’ll have to try a webcom, instead of doing it the old-fashioned way. Still haven’t located a hummer nest myself, but knew one was close by. Got several pics of the fledged youngsters last year.
Still early in the season here in NC, but watching carefully. Got the chance to see the red-shouldered hawks trying to make babies, though
Sheer happiness watching this–this link is going straight to my mom:-) They live south of Tucson, and so have lots of hummingbirds around (including a male Costa’s who sits defending the branch of a small tree just outside their kitchen window….he’s *very* vigilant!) No nests around, though, so they’ll love watching this.
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to win a prize draw, the first prize being a suite at the Bel Air for 3 whole days (In 1998 it was $675 per night – room only), or perhaps Dog guided the Lord Mayor of Leeds to select the ‘right’ ticket. I guess we will never know.
However, one morning I decided to walk from Santa Monica pier down through Venice Beach. Whilst stolling along there were Humminbirds, Pelicans and even an American Kestrel and no-one took a blind bit of notice. I felt like shouting -‘just look at what there is, look at what you’re not seeing’. But of course to the inhabitants they were commonplace but that was one of the highlights of my stay in LA, that and the Harris Hawk and dozens of other things that are generally off my radar.
