One of the reasons I love getting the emails from Jerry is that every one is a surprise…and a gift.
Damn.
The kid’s awesome.
I never did care much for Webber, but I have nothing but praise for her performance of it.
I know there are serious concerns about her stressing her voice in a way that might, if overdone, cause permanent damage. I still don’t hear that, but I’ll also be the first to admit that I’m a trumpeter, not a vocalist, and I may well not know what to listen for.
But…it occurs to me. She’s already in a position that should get her the best coaching available. If she wins this talent show — however it’s structured, I haven’t a clue — if she wins, that should absolutely guarantee her the right coaching. And, for that reason alone, I really hope she wins: to guarantee her a lifetime of success as a singer.

Yeah, I’m no expert on the mental development of ten-year-old girls, but still I feel unsettled watching Jackie speak and gesture during interviews. There seems to be a precocity that reeks of psychological grooming. I hope we’re wrong though. She has an extraordinary talent.

Who was saying they think she’ll burn out? Nah–that’s skaters and gymnasts, not musicians. She’ll be delighting our ears for years to come.

Charlotte Church recorded this piece at age 12 and it was very well received.
It’s difficult to tell how her voice will develop as she matures. Church did quite well over the years. It is my hope that Ms. Evancho enjoys success as well.

Wow! What a beautiful wee girl and an astounding voice!
However (sorry to be the cranky pants here) there is something fake in her demeanor. Voice is real yet feels too mature for her age. What kind of rigorous training does her life have to get to this point?
Her responses feel rather rehearsed and not spontaneous of a mature child of ten. I get a spidey sense that there has been some serious pre-programming and rehearsing of her responses. It feels very unchild-like.
I teach young children music. I have many wonderful in-tune singers. It is Jackie’s mannerisms that have me questioning.
I wish Jackie a rich musical life as well as a fun-filled childhood. Bravo to her for her passion in music and gift to us all!

Good voice, but she really needs training though. The technical flaws in her rendition butchered it. Not that the judges/producers gave a damn. Jackie brings in the ratings and she’ll be carried are far as they dare…
But, hey, she’s a cute white-girl doing something precocious, so time to get on the band-wagon, yes?

I would guess that, like most people, the judges/producers do not have the knowledge or experience to detect the technical flaws. I am one such person, and I can say that compared to the vocal performances that I have experienced in my life that this one ranks quite high. Both in the absolute sense and because of Jackie’s age.
I completely understand that someone with the knowledge and experience to critically evaluate Jackie’s singing would want to keep it real. And, I value the insights of such people. But, even though I am ignorant, I can’t help but think that someone that sounds as good as Jackie does at her age has the potential to become a seriously succesful artist.
What does her being white have to do with anything?
What does her being a girl have to do with anything, for that matter. (Rhetorical)
