Caturday felids: ninja-cat-in-the-box and rickrolling

This toy will amaze, delight, and puncture your children:

If you’re of a certain age (and by that I mean young), you’ll know what rickrolling is.  You may even have been a victim of this nefarious practice.  It involves luring people to click on a video by promising a particular content, and then, halfway through, the video turns into a performance of Rick Astley singing the obnoxious song, “Never gonna give you up.”  Wikipedia recounts the history of rickrolling pranks.

As an example, here’s one famous and cat-themed rickroll. As described on Wikipedia:

On January 13, 2009, in honor of the new YouTube hub for Congress, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi uploaded a video called “Speaker Pelosi Presents Capitol Cat Cam” to her official YouTube channel. She described it as “a behind the scenes view of the Speaker’s Office in the U.S. Capitol.” The video depicts cats roaming around the office. A rickroll occurs approximately halfway through the video.

Here it is:

That’s a long introduction to today’s second featured video:  kitteh Fro refusing to be rickrolled:

  1. If you’re of a certain age (and by that I mean young), you’ll know what rickrolling is.

    Woo hoo, I’m young!

So if I promise to stay up to date with the latest internet memes, my son will never think I’m lame and old? LEEEEROY JENKINS!!!!!!11!!11 When my new babby is made, will he/she also think I am cool?

The Macy’s Day rickroll has to be one of the most epic pranks EVAR!!11! Seriously. That was just plain awesome.

  2. Not *that* young, Jerry! Lauren (aged 14) has no idea what rickrolling is/was and was nonplussed by the Pelosi video…

  3. I’m young, but the first time I got rickrolled, my equally young fiancee had to tell me what had just happened. 😉

  4. The original was called a Duck Roll, which is when, in a forum thread, someone would post a link purportedly germane to the discussion which would instead be an obfuscation (using tinyurl.com or the like) of a link to this picture:

Then, someone got the idea to post a link to the Astley video on YouTube instead, and it became a Rick Roll.

Things like sticking the Astley video in the middle of another video came later.

  5. The ninja cat was very funny.

But Rickroll shmickroll… how about some sympathy for guys old enough to remember how INCESSANTLY that damn song was played at nightclubs in the late 80’s?

First Reagan, and then Astley. T’was enough to drive a man to golf, I tell you. The Astley pie chart is hilarious, though!
